would be awesome if businesses & promoters get more interest in the ladies game because i do believe many ppl would luv to watch it regardless of their gender and it would be great for advertisers as well... more viewership = more advertisers :)

FORMER World Ladies Junior Champion Suzie Opacic was minutes away from being caught in the gun drama that rocked Chandler’s Ford on Thursday morning.

The 19-year-old from Brambridge was due to continue preparations for Saturday's trip to Derbyshire for the Wytech Masters.

“I got here just after quarter past,” she said. “And it had just happened.”

With the road blocked, Suzie parked nearby and climbed a bank to get to the snooker club before the area was taped off.

“There was a red car, which was just behind the security van, with bullet holes in the bonnet. And there was one parked further along by the bank with a bullet hole.

“I was thinking ‘they’re shooting bullets this way and I’ve just run up there’.”

Two alleged bank robbers were gunned down by police just yards from Suzie's home club in Chandler's Ford. The club was sealed off all day.

THREE-time world ladies champion Reanne Evans added the Wytech Masters and the 2007 UK Championship to a growing list of titles at the weekend.

The 21-year-old from Gornal, West Midlands, pocketed £500 after a 4-2 Masters final victory over Emma Bonney (Portsmouth) at the North East Derbyshire Snooker Centre, Clay Cross.

And the following day, watched by boyfriend and world No 29 Mark Allen, mother-of-one Evans, beat England international Katie Henrick 3-0 in the UK final.

Evans, who won five of the six World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association events last season, still has the hunger to dominate the game and insists she will not join the lucrative US pool circuit.

“I hate pool,” she said.

The £1,300 Masters, the inaugural invitation-only WLBSA 2007/08 season curtain-raiser, was sponsored by Midlands-based IT company Wytech.

Bonney, 31, who lost 3-1 in the UK semis to Evans, played both tournaments with a £15 cue bought from a car-boot sale in Gosport a couple of weeks ago. The two-time world billiard champion said: “I couldn’t actually see if it was straight. I’ve not played a competitive game with it yet.”

Suzie Opacic (Chandler’s Ford) was minutes from being caught up in the gun drama just yards from her home club last Thursday. The 19-year-old former World Ladies Junior Champion lost 3-1 to Henrick in the UK semis.

Ronnie O’Sullivan’s cousin Maria Catalano, 25, scored the highest break, a 102 clearance to take a 2-1 lead against Henrick, but lost 3-2.

Jaique Ip-Wan In flew in from Hong Kong to take in both events. The 2006 International Billiards & Snooker Federation ladies runner-up was beaten 4-3 by Bonney in the Masters semis but saw off Jenny Poulter 2-1 to win the UK Plate.

The 27-year-old, whose trip was paid by the Hong Kong Billiards & Snooker Control Council, said: “It was hard for me to come here, a long flight.” But she “enjoyed” her first tournament in England and it anxious to return.

Katie clinches East Anglian Championship

WOMEN’S snooker star Katie Henrick was “over the moon” after clinching a first ranking event at Cambridge SC on Saturday (October 6).

Runner-up in Derbyshire last month, Henrick went one better to beat June Banks 3-1 in the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association East Anglian Championship final.

The 27-year-old from Bickley, Kent, pocketed £180 and is now provisionally ranked world number two.

“I’m really, really pleased,” said Henrick. “It was something I wanted to do this season and it took me up to number two as well, so that’s even more of a bonus.”

The former England international is a snooker professional at the RAC in Pall Mall and has played on the circuit for ten years. She lost to world number one Reanne Evans in the UK Championship final, the first event of the season.

Henrick added: “I’m really pleased to finally win one because I’ve had a couple of finals and not quite managed it, so to actually win today is such a boost.”

Banks was on course for a first tournament win since this event in 2005 after compiling breaks of 56, 41, 42 and 49 in the early rounds and taking a 1-0 lead in the final.

But the 38-year-old from Orpington, Kent, who picked up £80, said: “I ran out of steam in the end.”

World number one Evans, 21, was in action on the English Association of Snooker and Billiards Pro-Ticket Tour in Leeds.

Vicky Ashby, 24, from Hemel Hempstead, beat Hannah Jones from Derby, 2-0 in the Plate final.

England international Jones, 11, who is due to fly out to Thailand next month for the IBSF World Amateur Championships, reached a first final despite having had only four hours’ sleep the previous night.

I read that interview earlier, very interesting. Sad to see that she "hates pool", yet contemplates possibly as a last resort taking it up to "pay for" her snooker.

Reanne Evans is only 21 but she has already managed a feat that not even Ronnie O'Sullivan will match.

I find that a tad patronising, considering she is already one world title up on Ronnie ;)

There was a girl called Jaique Ip-Wan In (I think that is right!) who flew over from Hong Kong for the first ranking event of the season, the UK Championship and the Wytech Masters. Apparently, she was 2006 Ladies IBSF World Runner Up. She was beaten in SF of Masters by Emma Bonney 4-3 but won the UK Champ Plate.

I was watching her play some of her matches and I reckon she has a lot of potential. Nice solid cue action and great potter. I think we might be seeing a lot more of her in future. She said she enjoyed event and seemed keen to return.

Jaique Ip-Wan In is 27 and has a high match break of 61.

She speaks good English and enjoyed her trip to Derbyshire although she found it difficult to make the long flight on her own with no friends or coach.

It was her first tournament here.

Her trip was sponsored by the Hong Kong Billiards and Snooker Control Council and she would like to return if the HKBSCC will finance her.

She likes Mars bars and prefers to be photographer with her hair down.

As regards prize money:

The girls pay £30 to enter each event and prize money is paid out of that.

The only financial support the WLBSA receive at the moment is from Midlands-based IT company Wytech who sponsored the Masters.

This is all the more remarkable that it is the first time ever I see snooker mentioned in the online edition of "Le Soir" ... and it's about the Ladies ...:p

I am not one of the top lady players - I can regularly make breaks in the 70's and 80's in practice but sometimes struggle to make a break over 16 in a match! Sadly, 99% of males watching a reasonably attractive female playing a snooker or pool match (unless they are gay maybe!) are more interested in watching their bums when they bend over to take a shot rather than how good their cueing action is and their potting skills etc!!

When I played in my local pool league I used to have blokes coming up to me - even ones from my own team - saying things like "try and wear tighter jeans next time" and "I heard you were playing our team tonight and I think you have one of the best ar**s in the the whole pool league to I thought I would come along tonight specially to watch you"!!!!!!!!!!

I would much rather someone came to watch my snooker skills (not that I have many at the minute like!!! - one day hopefully) than for the above reason.

Oh and sorry Wolf ... by 'sexy' you meant us women clad in black pvc leather and kinky thigh high boots didn't u!!!!! lol :D

I've experienced the same as you whitewitch, bums and boobs respectively. But I also get a "... and she can play too." Don't think because they are slobbering over your body features that they can't appreciate a good cue action.

Interesting. I've always associated Snooker clubs as being dark and dingy and not the place a woman would be interested in visiting and certainly not practicing for hours. Obviously not the case but I've never seen a girl practicing on her own. Of course there is no reason why women can't play Snooker as well as males although apparantly it can be difficult for women with large breasts because it can hinder the cue rubbing against the side of their chests. Imagine having a partner who is a Snooker player. "Just going for a few frames love" "I'll come too and kick your a***" "ok, the loser cooks dinner" or "hit a century and I've got a surprise for you tonight!!" Hows that for an incentive :D

I think in that situation and in anticipation it would be acceptable to find something more interesting to look at than their cue action. Just keep the saliva well away from your tip.

Wow!!!

That is just awesome. Way to go Reanne Evans (two thumbs up). ;)

Has the break been video recorded? Can it be watched anywhere? How long did she take to clear the table? I'm very curious. :D

Bonney win for Emma at the South Coast Classic

SEVEN-time beaten finalist Emma Bonney has finally potted her way to glory in a women’s ranking event - with a £15 cue picked up at a car boot sale.

The 31-year-old from Portsmouth clinched the WLBSA South Coast Classic at the Q Ball SC in Eastbourne with a 3-2 victory over world number three June Banks from Orpington.

Stand-in film star Reanne Evans took centre stage in the quarter-finals with her highest break, a 140 total clearance in the first frame of a 3-0 last-eight win over Hampshire’s Suzie Opacic.

But Bonney had not read the script and ended the IBSF world champion’s 35-match unbeaten run on a fifth-frame black-ball decider in the semi-finals after trailing 2-1.

Evans took a 2-1 lead with breaks of 83 and 52 but two-time world billiards champion Bonney levelled and won the decider which was dominated by high-class snookers.

Bonney, who lost 3-2 to Evans at the same event in Brighton last year, said: “It’s about time I won. I’ve had a few chances to beat her and I managed to do it today.

“It’s always satisfying to beat someone when you know they’re cueing well. I had her snookered a couple of times, she had me a couple of times and I pulled out a very good blue, pink and black to win.”

Bonney bought her cue at a car boot sale in Gosport at the start of the season but left it in the car park at the last event at Rushden. It was spotted late at night by the tournament director and taken to Brighton.

Bonney said: “I’ve been getting on alright with it. I work for an insurance company, just hope they’re going to let me have the time off for the World Championship because they’ve changed the date. If they don’t, I’ll have to leave,” she laughed.

Surrey’s Marianne Williams beat local girl Martina Lumsden 2-1 in the Plate final.

The day before the fourth ranking event of six, mother-of-one Evans stood in for actress Kristin Scott Thomas to play a snooker shot in Noel Coward’s Easy Virtue which was being filmed in Reading.
