Can anybody recommend a really good book about snooker please? A friend of mine recently brought me a book from UK which she bought in Waterstones. It is probably the worst book, of any kind, I have ever seen offered for sale in a British bookshop! When I get chance I will put some examples on this thread. Areally useful book would be great to fill in some of my abundant spare time here.

How about 'how i play Snooker' by Joe Davis. They may not be that easy to find but you can always look on Ebay, Amazon etc..
Wasn't that long ago that i read this book which i found it to be very interesting..

Frank Callan's Snooker Clinic. There are only used copies but it worth the search.
This is the first one I would recommend and I've quite a few by John Pulman, Joe Davis etc.
The one you got isn't: 'Know the game: Snooker' is it?
The latest version just says Snooker on I think and it's really thin. It is the worst snooker book ever but there is a pool version which is many times worse.

There are LOADS of snooker coaching books, but only a small number in print. If you can get used copies of coaching books written by the top players of the past then you will be pleased with them I'm sure. Terry Griffiths, Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, John Spencer, Fred Davis, John Pulman, Joe Davis, Rex Williams, Cliff Thorburn, Steve Davis, Dennis Taylor, have all written good coaching books, and probably many more players too.

I recommend the one written by Rex Williams. I picked it up off ebay for around £1.50!!
It contains lots of information on specific shots to play in certain scenarios. Explaining exactly how you want to hit the cue ball with diagrams of what you want to achieve.
For example there is a section about going from black to yellow when you need a clearance. It explains around 10 different shots you can use from all possible cueball positions on the black. :)

I'm not sure if your able to download any of the books suggested to you from the internet, but there is a good chance you find and buy some of them possibly from Ebay or Amazon say.
Worth a look anyway..

Philip, I was in Waterstone's yesterday browsing through the snooker books. There was only about 5 and three were autobiographies ( Ronnie, Jimmy and The Hurricane). I was looking for one by Stephen Hendry but they didn't have it. I only remember seeing one on coaching. Small pocket diary size with various diagrams. Didn't pay much attention to it. What exactly are you looking for? I've got "Successful Snooker" by Steve Davis and "Play To Win" by Jim Meadowcroft & John Hennessey. Not sure if they've helped me much but are worth a read when nothing is going right and you're just trying to get back to basics.

This morning around 12:45 BST I couldn't get through to TSF. Is there a problem with their servers? Can someone email ferret or one of the other administrators?
Thanks,

Sorry I have been a long time responding. I can't look at snooker books before buying as I have to order from Amazon, being in China, so was looking for books that people here recommend to improve my game generally. After the one that somebody brought me, see my separate posing, I appreciate the sense that people have posted here.

You are indeed correct Spike and for anyone interested, a second edition of this book is currently being printed and should be ready for release late January.
It has been slightly updated to fit in with the game as it is now, as opposed to back in 1988 when it was originally released. It is also now in colour which I'm sure you'll all agree is a massive help where the diagrams are concerned!
It is a very interesting read and contains 112 diagrams including ideas for practice routines.

When you say 'recent' books, which ones are you referring to?
All the books I have are a few years old now. If anyone can recommend recent ones I'd be grateful.
I'd like to see a more modern coaching book that really goes into breakbuilding and the finer elements of the game. I think the technical theories of the game have moved on a bit in the last 20 years since the likes of O'Sullivan graced the sport.
I particularly liked the Spencer book because it gives a good logical explanation on positional play and breakbuilding whereas many of the other books don't really go into it that much. It really gets you thinking about the game and the points you will pick up are easy to remember.
The other one I like picking up every now and then for fun is Jimmy Whites snooker Masterclass. That book tells you stuff that other books would never touch upon. Both books have great, simple diagrams.
Joe Davis seems to be a must read for most people learning the game.
All the books cover the basics to varying degrees. I recommend picking up at least 2 or 3 books because they all have a slightly different emphasis on different elements of the game.
Here is a list of what I have:
Successful snooker - Steve Davis
Spencer on Snooker - John Spencer
How I play Snooker - Joe Davis
Stephen Hendry's Snooker Masterclass
Jimmy White's Snooker Masterclass
Winning Snooker - Eddie Charlton
Improve your snooker - Clive Everton
Complete Snooker for the Amateur - Joe Davis
