New Professional Tips.
I have a few samples of Stu Greens (GBL) pro granite tips - these might well be the new benchmark for a pressed tip, they start of very hard and soften up to a perfect playing tip, suitable for players who like a harder pressed tip. i would like to know what people think of these so before i put them on sale at a price of £1.50 each. I have a few of these to give away to the first people who post a name and address or PM me one in exchange for their opinions.

i have been using these for about 2 months and start very hard and play into a nice playing tip. They also last alot longer than any other pressed tip i've been using them on my break cue at pool. Another surprising plus factor is they hold chalk very well too. Good tips if you dont mind playing them in first.

nothad a tip shape so easy for a long time when putting them on, ok needs a bit of elbow grease to get it started off but once you take the top sheen off teh tip they shape up superbly...
used it today for first time myself (filed from 10mm to 9.5) and boy are they a good feel when hitting the ball, and generated a hell of a lot more screw with it than i usually do with the blue diamonds....
(in fact once they go on sale will be purchasing a few to replace the BD's have "generously" used on my brothersd and dads cue hehe!!!)

not used elks or talismans, they are harder than a BD but hold the chalk a damn site better, and im finding i can get miles more control off the white with it
ive used BD's for years and the occasional diamond + tips and these **** all over them both

First of all- Thanks for the tips Andrew! Put one on yesterday and have to say as i was shaping it i was thinking these tips have been perfectly named:eek: Very high pitched sounding when you hit the ball that takes a bit of getting used to. Once you get past the sound they bite the ball very well and deliver every ounce you put into the shot as opposed to softer tips soaking up a lot of the energy like a sponge. When i was a kid i used to put tips on and round them down to the ferrul to get maximum feel from the shot- the downside to this was they only lasted two weeks max. These tips give that maximum feel on every shot without the fear of miscueing or slipping slightly, just enough to miss the pot or position. Very impressed:)

How much really would you put it down to be being the tip?
quite a lot really as my old BD on it just wouldnt hold chalk and felt flat... had no confidence in it, this one is consistent, feels good when you strike the cue knowing what you put on it is going to come off

maybe, but its the feel of the tip when playing with it, and the sound it makes when you strike is consistent and re-assuring, none of the dull thuds you can get with BD's or diamond plus tips

they are a bit disconcerting when you have a feel fo them before sticking it on, but once its glued on and you start shaping it to how you like them, you soon tell just how good a tip its going to be :) and at £1.50 or whatever ADR and stu are going to sell tem for its well worth it :)

Trigger... like andrew said... use his tip guide or the one created by Mike Wooldridge... both excellent!!
If you need to play very quickly use Loctite Gel Control... give you a little time to move the tip if you need to... BUT... if you can leave it overnight use Araldite Epoxy... you have all the time you need to get it right with that stuff.. then clamp it and leave it overnight... it will never fall off with that stuff as long as you get the surfaces flat and clean!!
trigger666

i agree with you totally ....but to be honest ive used both these methods before and because i like the tip completely flush with the ferrule i cant seem to get it 100% spot on !!!
then its just a matter of time before i have a bad session and blame the tip which then i will probably do a ronnie at the end of the match and bite it off
(i know its in my head but its still in there..!!...lol)
so its best for me to wait and use it for my pool cue as i will be able to get it perfect thx luke

Hi ADR147,
I have received the tip yesterday, thank you so very much.
The tip looks to be very firm and well made. The side of the tip came very nicely burnished and pressed. The shape of the tip is domed and very symmetrical.
I have just installed it.
It is very easy to trim, and is very firm. Did not show any "hair' as would sometimes happen with Elk when I turn and cut it on a lathe.
From the way it is cut, I feel that it is about the same in terms of firmness as talisman S, may be just a tiny bit firmer.
Very easy to work with, and seems to be a much more consistent tip than Elk master.
I noticed that it is not blue like blue diamond or elk master, but rather more like a dark brownish, like a triangle. I guess it is made from buffulo hide but without any chalk infused into the leather?
It is only 10mm, but still have a lot of "meat" on the top for me to work with. I like it as it allows me to shape it anyway I like and still have a good thickness remaining on the tip afterwards. Some pressed tips I have tried before were a bit too thin so if I want the shape to be very pointy the side woudl become very thin.
I do not know how well it holds chalk as I have not tried it yet.
I will go and try it out in a couple hours, and will ask other players in my club to give me their feedback as well. Will report back later.
Thank you very much.

Hi,
I did not have much time to try the tip out, only hit some balls for about an hour, but I did get my friends in my club to try the tip out as well a few hours later.
I think this tip hits good.
It does hit a bit firmer than a Talisman soft, but the feedback is nice and the chalk stays on very well. I do not have to work hard at all to move the cue ball around with both top and bottom and stun shots. No miscues at all. Very easy to control the cue ball. I was expecting a rock hard hit but it is not like that at all.
I do notice that the tip has mushroomed a bit. Talisman would not in my experience does that after an hour.
I have let other decent players in my club try the tip, along with my other cue with talisman tip. Almost everyone reported that they like both, with a bit more preference on Talisman.
Without seeing a lot of them I cannot say how consistent these tips are, but the one that I have tried for about an hour hitting balls by myself exceeded my expectation. Other players also seemed quite happy, but not overwhelmed. That could be because they were not used to it and they did not try it on theor own cues.
From my limited experience so far, I would say it is a very ncie alternative to Talisman M, without the high price tag and the risk of delamination. But this tip may mushroom a bit easier than a layered tip.
I will try to trim the tip and then hit some more balls and report back.
That is my totally honest feedback on the tip so far.
Thank you very much ADR147, I am very happy to have the opportunity to try out this nice new product.
Please PM me on purchase details, I am interested in buying some.
Thank you.:)

Just put the second freebee on a different cue. This tip was taller than the first and is a softer hit. Both play very well. It looks like i may have had both extreme's in my free tips and have now bought more.:)

andrew, had some feedback from my club and im wondering if i can get a discount for a bulk order :)
they all absolutely love the tip and want them on thier own cues - they use BD or elkmasters usually, there is one with a woolridge tip and (sorry mike) they prefer the GBL to the woolridge....

I use Talisman soft. Andrew sent me one of this tips and I gave it a try. well, they are great: very hard and solid but with great response. have been playing with the tip for 2 weeks time and decided to stick with it as the tip comes better and better with time: a bit softer than the first day, butt still hard with very nice shape. With Talisman, I always had the feeling the tip is not solid as this one. the reason I think has to do with Talisman is laminated and this one is pressed.
To make long story short, it has the same feel as Talisman but gives you more confident as its more solid.

been using this tip for a week now and it is just a little bit to hard for me , it does sound very different than elks , and does take quite a bit of getting used too sound wise !! but for those looking for a talisman like tip at less than a 1/4 of the price then i would say the pro granite is deffo the way to go ,, playing wise it has great feel for such a hard tip and far easier to work the cueball with spin and side but it can sound high pitched when playing with side and top / screw ,, i am used to playing with the dull thud of an elkmaster tip so i found it hard to adjust , but for those using talisman soft u prob wouldnt notice the difference on the cue but deffo in the pocket !!!!! just out of curiosity andrew do they do them in 10.5 and 11mm as i like to play with a mushroom tip , and my ferrule is 9.75 with a 10mm elk it spreads out into a nice mushroom but with the pro granite it did not spread at all !!!!!! so 10.5mm would be worth another try or 11mm to trim slightly ,,, but i can imagine this tip being a very big seller ,,,,,,,,

I have been playing with a hard talisman now for about a week (4 hours a day) and i must say i find it very good..i just cant get over the amount of control when close in and around the black area...also the back spin is unreal ! sounds strange but the softer you hit the cue ball then the more the back spin takes on the white...yet to try a granite tip but when i do i shall post the comparison..

OK so ive tested the tips, they came in the mail yesterday, and i tested them today. I played both snooker and 8 ball pool with them, and i think they're fantastic. Theyre really responsive, and they grip the ball heaps. I normally use elk's myself, but this is a really nice change. ive used talisman before, but i find they dont grip the ball that well when i needed to hit softer, and i miscued a fair bit with the talisman, didnt seem to hold chalk that well, but that could be because the tip was bald. Not only do these hold chalk well, but they keep shape really well. havnt had to reshape it or rough the tip up again, its still holding chalk after 3 hours of play.
im really loving the amount of spin and power i can get, from a simple cue through with these. i get half table length backspin with ease on a snooker table now, when i use to hav trouble getting any at all playing with the elk. ive also tried blue diamond, found them to be really inconsistent, and the fibre of the tip always came apart.
i think im going to stick with these tips for a while. i doubt anything better will come along, although i do plan to order a pack of MW supertips from ADR. give those a try too.
one question for ADR147 aswell, do you do discounts for bulk orders of these tips? maybe less for shipping if i buy more than one pack(to australia)? down here, everyone pretty much uses a elk master, rarely do you see a player using anything different. i might pass some around to some of the better players, get their opinion on it. i think they might like it, cause they like talismans, but arent ready to pay the price for it. =]
my overall opinion, its a great tip thats worth every cent. gets 2 thumbs up from me.

hey Andrew! Just received my tips Friday, and tried it down at the club for 1 hour, I've put it on a new 1 piece ash cue, plays alright, although initially it felt spongy, maybe I had the tip too thick (need to shape it down more) or maybe because there's so much getting used to (new cue and tips), but still hits the ball quite good for a new tip, will try it again when I get a chance...
btw,I'm still waiting for my positive feedback from ebay!!! :D

Put one of these granite tips on earlier and went for a few frames, just got back...
First thing i noticed is how reactive these tips are...:)...
I was expecting the tip to be a much firmer and harder hit than it is, a few people have said they are very hard, i did'nt find it too hard tbh, might be because it's massive at the mo and still could do with some filing down.:)
The reaction on the cueball is totally different to what i'm used to...(BD).. strikes the ball nicely, does what you want it to a treat, especially in/around the pack, it just bites into the cueball, theres much more action on the cueball with less effort... easier to get a bit of action on the cb on the more delicate/softer shots...
(i found)...
Thumbs up from me....:D:D:D:snooker:...........

I'd echo all the positives already mentioned, been very impressed with mine. While it's certainly firm it's not ridiculously so and I feel very comfortable with it.
One thing I did notice was better striking from off the cush but that could just be me.
I recently bought a cue from Stu and mentioned the tip when ordering - he fitted one and included a box for free. Pretty tidy imo.
Cue is great but that's for another thread with a few more hours under my belt.

Got mine delivered a couple of weeks back but only had a chance to play yesterday, so I changed my current tip to this. I have to say it plays well straight away and it has a great hit when striking off the cushion.
As anyone else who had tried this tip has found out, it holds the chalk very well and generates good amount of spin with little effort. Overall, for me, the tip neither feels too hard or soft when playing and just has a very good 'feel' when striking the cueball...and that is all I really ask for in a tip.

Good evening ADR,
You sent me a tip and this is what i think:
Personally it doesn't suit my game like an elkmaster does.
They are very hard and take a long time to bed in.
However when bedded in nicely they are great for applying spin and controlling shot power, also they are great at holding the chalk.
Thanks for the tip,

I have to thank you for sending me the Granite Pro Tips. I finally got one installed on my main cue (1-piece Aurora by poolqjunkie) and I've been using it for about a month now.
I found the tip to play beautifully and for some reason after using it for awhile I felt more confident in the balls as it seems to grip the cueball much better than a Talisman or an Elk Master. I found there was no break-in period as with an Elk Master or Talisman S.
I prefer a hard tip anyway and these Granite tips suit me down to the ground and as soon as my supply runs out I will be ordering more for sure.
Thanks,
Terry

Actually, I normally tap my new tips with a hammer for a little while and I found I could play well with the Granite right away but with the Talisman it was taking a couple of frames.
Admittedly, it could well have been me. As an example, I was using the line-up to test the Granite and managed 2 clearances in a row with no problems at all and using all the stuff I could and selecting difficult reds to get on with position but the Granite was definitely better for me than the Talisman Soft I had on. (I haven't tried the Talisman Hard as yet but I do have some here)

Thanks Andrew for sending me a sample.
Nice tip and way better than Elks or BD. easy enough to put on and cut, feel hard to the touch but play a lot softer. They hold their shape a lot better than any other pressed tip and for just under £2 you cant go wrong.
For me they are a little to soft as i use talisman hard. but i could use these, would just take me a while to adjust.
Overall verdict, if you like a nice pressed tip, the way elks used to be, then you will love these. Great value for money and nice to play with.
If you like a hard tip like talisman M-H i think you would find these a little on the softer side but nowhere near as soft as elks. I would give these tips an 9-10 and would recommend them. ;)

I fitted one of these today.
It's the first time i've tried such a hard tip, I've always been happy with my Mike Wooldridge Supertips after getting fed up of trying to find a decent Elkmaster.
I have to say i'm surprised how much I liked it, they hold chalk really well, it's easy to fit and plays really well.
I felt like I had a little more control over the cue ball, and I actually beat my playing partner who is alot better than me.
He regularly makes 40/50 breaks compared to my 20 breaks if i'm lucky, but tonight I played alot better.
Now i'm not saying this is down to the tip, but I did feel happy with it straight away.

Another thumbs up from me on Pro G tips........Recently got a couple of tubs of them and have them fitted on a few different (mostly 8ball) cues atm..... Their playing characteristics relative to other tip types have been well enough described here already so no point in me rattling on....... except to say that they are a very good product indeed and great value for such good tips.
Nice one Stu!!:snooker:

Just in case anyone misunderstood my post regarding these tips, let me clarify.
I think these tips are very very good, and my own opinion was they are far superior to any other pressed tip i have ever used.
I only said I found it a little softer than a Talisman Hard(that I use)
This is no Slight on the tips, i am sure most who use Talisman hard would say they are like rocks and would probably say they are too hard.
I will state once again, i like these tips a lot and could use them no problem and i give them the thumbs up.

Just bought some of thes tips having always used elks . To save time filing my tips to get them to the height i like I used to slice a bit off the bottom . Thinking of doing the same with these , as I dont fancy filing these to the desired height , they are much harder than elks . Has anyone tried this with these , id like to know before I try it .

Hi Andrew , i've just received the GBL tips from yourself , they do look quite high . But are you saying that they should just be left to bed in ? They are higher than the MW Tips , so i assume it is just down to personal preference . I look forward to trying

i would just be careful if you really don't need to touch them don't - if you cut down tips they are often harder because there is less tip to absorb the impact.

Thanks adr , i,ve received my tips and they are slightly higher than Elks . If I didnt cut an elk then I felt they took a lot of playing before they were bedden in to my liking . Looking at the pro tips they will take even longer , hence the reason asking if anyone else cuts these tips .

Well I just cut a third off one of these and they are very hard to cut freehand . I had a brand new erwin blade and had to turn it around half way through .
Well worth the effort though if you dont like a high tip , no matter how hard they are a high tip just feel like a block of wood on my cue .
Now for the other four

ive had this tip on me n my brothers cue, still playing wonderfully :P
had on for about 2 n a half weeks. theyre thin cause we sanded them down, because i use a 9mm tip, and therefore, didnt want the tip coming off with a miscue if it was too high. =]

dont get this. surely the reason you get the grip with the white is because of the height of the tip ?
now when i used elks (am using one now as me GP came off other day an waiting stu to send me a pack) the problem with a high tip is they're too soft. what works for the granite pro in my mind, is you have the height to influence the bite the tip gets, however, the compactness of the tip, means you dont have the cushioned contact that maybe takes the bite out of the ball.

well, yes and no. last time i left a tip really high, 1 miscue, sent the tip coming off, and i had to put it back on. to be honest, it still plays just as well, a bit thinner. only this time, if i miscue accidentally, the tip is less likely to come off =]

the tip shouldnt fly off regardless of height if its fitted properly.
the height youve sanded those down to they wont last long as they are nearly at the height before youd think about replacing them.

well well ive had them on for close to 3 weeks now, my cue (the one to the left) is the tip i took off my old cue, so thats been on there a month n a half, and the other one, is one i fitted about 2n a half to 3 weeks ago for my brother. his one mushroomed heaps tho, and went flat, but now that its played in, its kept its shape like that. i didnt sand his one down much. i do plan to change them very soon, once my new tips come in :P hopefully will b less than 2 weeks.
for the past 2 to 3 weeks, ive been playing about 4 hrs a day. which is, more than average? lol some days its 8+ hours :S snooker and pool. tips still work fine tho =] just gotta wait for shipping of new tips :P

have just used another 2 tips. for those that really dont like the initial ping to these tips (when first fitted) try scuffing the bottom of the tip with very abrasive sandpaper. you will maintain the hardness of the tip, it just doesnt appear to ping. plays very well as well. just fitting another 2 an they appear to hold together very well on the 8-9 mm tips that us little table players use. better call stu again for another lot.

I tried a Pro Granite tip for the first time last night. I've always used elks and layered tips never really appealed to me so the Pro Granite seemed a worthwhile experiment.
To be fair I didn't expect an awful lot from it. I've read up on tips as much as anyone else and figured that a lot of simple things are made to seem very complicated and overhyped. Generally people will swear by what they use or plan to invest in.
The tip took me 2-3 frames to get comfortable with but once settled they are absolutely phenominal in terms of grip. I could cue smoothly in confidence knowing that I wouldn't miscue on long pots with top spin. Even in and around the black ball area, delicate screws and side was made so so easy given the amount of grip on the cue ball.
What people have said before is true - initially the hit is hard but it beds fairly quickly and improves. It's hard to put into words as once bedded it's still hard but not at all uncompromising.
I'd highly recommend this tip to people who are constantly rummaging through elkmaster boxes checking for firm ones; in terms of hit and feel they are fairly similar. What I get from these that elks couldn't give me is the phenominal grip 100% of the time.
I know that tips along with cues in general can work psychologically and make people feel as though they've made a positive change. For me, just knowing I won't miscue is comfort enough for me to relax and concentrate soley on cueing the shot.
5 stars from me and definitely my tip of choice.

Well, on the weekend, i gave my mate James Mifsud (ranked number 6 in australia for snooker) a tip because his brother, Steve, had really liked the 1 i gave him. I also gave him a pack of 5 to sell to Luke Hough (ranked top 20ish?) when he was at a tournament last weekend. i hadnt heard back from james, as i had seen him last friday. i then asked Luke if he got the tips off james, and he told me he didnt want them, because he had already gotten some and he tried one, and miscued with a massive chunk flying out. i then asked james what he thought of the tip, and james said the same thing. 2 top players, same weekend, miscueing and massiv chunk coming off the tip. sounds like really bad odds, but i just wanted to know if this ever hapened to anyone.
never happened to me, and i hardly miscue with these. only miscue after 3 shots without chalking it..
anyways, he said he will giv it another try. -_-
All i wanted to do was spread awareness of new things to australia.. people are so against change sometimes it hurts. lol

Pro Granite tips are very good.
Hold the chalk well, give you a good grip on the cueball.
They don't loose shape and are very responsive.
These tips look very hard at the outset but when you trim them down and shape them they become softer.
Cheers to Stuart for a great product!

Ok, I've a question regarding pro granite tips. I was off snooker for a while,so after I fitted the tip, I played with it maybe a few months later. Anyhow, since I've a 9mm cue, and generally the say the height of the tip should be 1/3rd of its diameter, I reduced a bit of height after I fitted it. Could this have led to the tip not producing much spin? It seems like it doesn't quite grip the cue ball. I'm comparing it with a elk. Its especially evident on the screw shots. So is it possible that the reduced height means there isn't enough 'meat' on the tip to get the action,or is it just a whole lot more difficult to do than with an elk?
BoBnoGG!n
30th May 2010, 01:00 PM
Hey, i play with a 9mm and i leave the overall height at about half of the size of my ferrule. and then i play it in. even if its tall to begin with, play it in before u start sanding it down. i find it plays in to a rlly good height and doesnt feel too tall/unnatural.
aussie147
30th May 2010, 02:11 PM
i'd back that up too. Dont sand the tip down too much leave it higher and play it in a bit. Like i said about these tips on another thread, i had one installed 2 days ago and went down the club on saturday to try it out. I was skeptical at first after reading how hard people said they were on this forum but i thought they were brilliant. They grip the cue ball alot more than elks which is all i had ever previously used and you can get alot more reaction on the cue ball. And after 6 hours practice the shape hadnt change at all.

30th May 2010, 03:03 PM
Ah! There we go then! Thanks guys!:) ok,so I guess I'm going to replace this one.. I think its compressed way too much to give enough reaction.. But apart from that, consistency and feel is awesome! Can't complain at all.. Its quite brilliant, really! I think the mushrooming I've encountered is also because there isn't enough tip to bed in. Thanks a mill guys! Great help!:)
