View Full Version : What annoys you when playing a shot, from the opponent?

Just for a bit of fun. Or to get it out there and let players know what annoys you when taking a shot!!!
I was recently pulled up in a local comp by another player. He asked that I don't chalk my cue when he's at the table. I apologised, but after the match was over I asked him to expand. He said he didn't like players chalking the cue when he was at the table, on a shot or not. My dislike from other players which I think is massive gamesmanship is when I'm taking a shot and the other player starts wiping is cue up and down cue going all over the place. Not bothered if it's behind me. But if it's in my vision it really annoys me, cos all I can see us something going up and down. I've even seen this on tv. Pros wiping their cues in front of a players shot!!
What don't you like and why???

Opponent unscrewing their cue or putting it down as if they have lost when you still have balls to pot.

Good one. That is a very bad move and unsporting

That happened against me in a league match. My opponent started unscrewing his cue when I was on frame ball. I mean it put me off in the sense that instead of keeping my flow and potting the black, I stopped, looked at him, and thought "Huh?". Lo and behold I go and miss the black so he pieces his cue back together. His team mates apologised on his behalf. Luckily I went on to win the frame.
Is the unscrewing of a cue a concession? Could I have gone over and shook his hand?

If someone unscrews their cue whist you are at the table, you should just stop playing and go to shake their hand.
They will soon look like a plonker if they haven't conceded!

I really hate it when someone in your line of sight suddenly decides to move just as you're about to deliver the cue. I lost an important pool match on the black some months back because my opponent did that. Whether it was deliberate gamesmanship I wouldn't like to comment, but I was absolutely fuming.

Great call. I'm pretty sure there is a rule in eightball where unscrewing your cue is considered to be a forfeit.

Unscrewing the cue should mean you concede the frame, pool or snooker. Players ego do that are idiots and have no respect.

I hate it when people concede on your turn that annoys me a lot. I also hate it when my opponent leaves the table, whether to check the football score or to get a drink it really annoys me, surely people are able to wait until the end of the frame! I also hate it when my opponent tries to tell me what ball I should have played or gone for straight after I've beaten them, especially when they're useless, although saying that you've got to be pretty useless too lose to me lol! :) :snooker:

getting a drink always seems to be done against faster rhythmic players clearly a tactic and a foul one at that

If you unscrew your cue, it should be a concession.
I've commented on it many times in this forum. I can't stand it. Conceding on your opponent's shot is out of order too.
During practice, not counting the breaks properly or spotting the balls is a faux pas.

It really does my head in, happened to me in a league match with blue pink and black left on table i needed all 3 to win and blue to pink was a tough shot, my opponent put his cue down and sat down. Was gonna ask him if he was conceding but he would only of said no and probably would of rattled me. I managed to clear the balls to win but if i had lost i would of flipped my lid. He won the most wins last season and was unbeaten this season so there was already pressure on me to clear up.
Pottr, i hate that too. I practiced with a team mate the other day, had a break of 51 but he said it was 29 lol, luckily i count my breaks in my head as i'm going.

Hope they don't find out i've mentioned it ! our womens darts team when at home can get a bit loud (similar to winning the lottery) when getting a double. Usually when your about to take a shot. lol As for a player un-screwing their cue. I've played pool at professional tournament level to local league and seen frames taken off players for doing it. Even putting your cue in the case or even just not holding while a games in play can lose you the game. (world rules)

Opponents supporters they've brought and third mobile goes off and they answer it while walking off. That did me last week. In our local league now. If a players mobile goes off. They lose the frame. Anybody else have that rule???

Hendry is the worst culprit of this in the professional game. He does it every single match, more so when the scores are close though. I'm pretty sure he did it recently this season in a match and his opponent missed, he screwed his cue back together, won the frame and match!
My main gripe is when you are playing a colour and just as you are on your backswing your opponent or ref starts walking towards the pocket where the ball is being played into. It has cost me loads of pots as that sudden movement of walking in front of your shot takes away your concentration. I've had this from quite a few people in the past but my mate does it worst of all. Nearly always causes an argument!

Here's one:
People watching the frame who feel the need to say "Good Shot" whenever someone rolls in a ball that's unmissable.
I think the phone one is forgivable if they mention before hand that they're on call for work or their missus might go into labour. If the phone goes off for any other reason they should be warned before they have the frame docked.

Didn't realise about hendry doing it. I'll have to keep my eye on that one! Surely it's frame conceded? I hear you on opponent or ref walking toward the pocket. It happens a lot. I can put up with it in practice. In matches if the ref or opponent does it. I stand up and reset myself. Sometimes giving the a look at the same time. So they realise. I played a final recently and the ref knew my opponent really well. He just kept talking to him on my shots. And even sometimes doing what you mentioned. Maybe a cunning ploy!!! Ha ha

Ha ha pottr. The "good shot" or "good 8" or "good 11". We get that a lot in wmc in leagues. When the not do good players pot two or three balls. They call of "good 8" from two easy straight forward shots. Pmsl in my mind every time. Shouldn't it be that was a good 50, 60, 70 etc.......

Hahahaha.... Never play my brother. Sober a 2 year old would wipe the floor with him, hammered out of his mind he turns into a machine! Never misses, and then promptly passes out 20 mins after the match.
I'm with you guys on getting pissed at the running commentary from the peanut gallery though.

ar*eholes on the other tables, literally, when they see you down on a shot and try and "squeeze" in to play theirs as well shoving their backsides into your face, or almost sitting on the cushion of your table right down where you are looking,...
other people on tables shouting and messing about ignoring other people playing.
loud music or the telly doesnt actually bother me, its other people that do!

These two things happened to me in competition this season:
1) My opponent put me in an almost impossible snooker. His father walked to the table and took a laugh at me: "ha ha, how are you gonna come out of that?".
I walked away and waited until the ref had removed him, then played a 4 cushion escape, hit it at first attempt and left it safe (and won the frame on the black) :-))
2) In another match, my opponent started talking to the ref when I was coming to the table. So I just stood there and waited, until he said "hey, it's your turn you know?". I said "I know, but I'm waiting until your coffee break is over". Boy, he was p*ssed :-)
(won that frame as well, they don't call me "the Mentalist" for nothing! -I ALWAYS stay calm and charming, and smile-)

Ha ha. You could also be the new dexter!!!
I played the other night against a friend. He takes it a little serious but hardly ever takes a frame. He was on a 30 ish break when the nice barmaid came over to collect our bottles. He totally fluffed a straight black with deep screw. Think he was attempting screw with side to show off. So the barmaid collecting classes adds to the list. She is nice though tbf ;-)

Arghhhhhhh. I got done by the unscrewing of a cue last night. Thought about standing up and offering my hand. There were still three reds left on. Think he thought I wouldn't miss. Ha ha. I got a kick and missed a roll in. Luckily enough he missed. Phew!!!!

The one that used to always p*** me off was when I am faced with a ever-so-slightly difficult shot and my opponent would stand and start furiously chalking their cue, as if to say they've no faith in my ability to make the shot.
My friend Stu used to do that twice or more a frame!
