hi all,
im just curious to know what things made you pick up a cue and start playing. i was on holiday playing pool and started to enjoy it so when i came back i started playing on my granddads 8x4 table and it all went from there tbh.

The answer is: STEVE DAVIS.

When the BBC came on cable in 1984, I was 13 years old.
The first match I watched was the Embassy World final Davis-White (18-16). I didn't miss that many matches since ;-)
When I was a teenager, I was a BMX-racer. I quit BMX in 1991, because I (finally) wanted to play snooker in competition. I started playing tournaments in the summer of 1992, and won my first "official" tournament in november 1992.

Some people compare Steve Davis to god, I think that's silly. Ok, he is fantastic, but he is not Steve Davis...

I'm a relative newcomer to the game, despite being over 30 :p I started playing after coming to the UK and watching the 2007 World Championships. I was looking for work at the time so I had ample time to watch /a lot/ of snooker :D Prior to that I had played a fair bit of pool, but never snooker .. it's just not that common to find a snooker table in New Zealand, except in the retired serviceman's association (RSA) clubs where all the old boys who fought in the war play it.

I was taught how to play by my dad. Started off on a pool table at the local WMC then when I could reach the table he showed me how to play snooker.
I think i'm quite lucky really because it turned out my old man was a well known snooker and billiard player when he was younger.
If it wasn't for him I most likely wouldn't be playing this great game today :)

Got playing with my dad from a young age. He played regular in local snooker & pool leagues and we've had a 7x4 pool table sat in our back reception room (where any 'normal person' :D would have a dining table) since I was about (previously had a similarly sized snooker table in its place). As a kid I'd mainly play pool & watch the old man play snooker as there were age restrictions in the local social club, but now and then would get a sneaky frame or 2 in

I used to play pool for a local pub back home when I was a teenager and you couldnt keep me off a table. watching the world championships last year I thought I'd give snooker a try. I'm slowly getting the hang of it, just wish I could play more often as I'm only managing once a week at the moment.

TV, the matchroom mob, and a pool/snooker hall on the high street. The 80s really was the halcyon period. Characters like Jimmy, Alex Higgins, big Bill, Kirk Stevens, even interesting Davis made the game human, entertaining and emotional. It was real. Today, Hearn's robots (on the treadmill) are ruining the game in this sense, though succeeding at building a bigger tournament base, just with snooker clubs closing and no-one actually playing. Contrast this to China and Germany where the game is exploding. It's such a shame that most Brits are lazy sofa or computer gaming types.

I used to help my brother deliver the local free newspaper on a Friday afternoon after school many moons ago, and he used to take me for a few frames down the local snooker club as payment..... and I've been hooked ever since!!

well , when my mother got cancer i needed something that could make me forget everything . one day i just saw a couple of frames on a french tv channel ( there was a competition called CANAL+ snooker trophy ) and immédiatly felt in love with the game . as my mother health start getting worse and worse i just got more involved into snooker . i think in the early years and especialy when she died it was more a therapy than an entertainement . now 14 years after i still love the game like it if was the first day and still feel the need to play to get peace of mind as it require so much concentration and dedication that it's thousands time better than yoga lol

Started playing pool on holiday with my Dad and took a shine to it. After a few months playing pool it turned out I had a nack for it. After a little while my grandad introduced me to snooker taking me down the pub on the 8x4 table. I remember one afternoon when the World Cup was on I played a quick frame at half time and made a century on the small table so I got playing in the local snooker club on the 12x6 tables and played a load until I was around 15ish. At around 16 I suffered from depression and lost motivation for pretty much everything and haven't really got back into it yet, almost 17 atm. Hopefully I will get into it properly when I can drive and get to clubs easier.
