The highest break made by a player who went on to lose the frame is 73. Jimmy White made a break of 73, taking ten reds and nine blacks, in the sixteenth frame of his 1987 semi-final against Steve Davis; Davis potted a red and fluked the black in making a 31 break, later gaining the two snookers he required and eventually winning the frame 74–73. Matthew Stevens made a 73 break against Peter Ebdon in 2002 – also in the sixteenth frame of the semi-final. Ebdon required four snookers and obtained two and a free ball, before clearing to the black to win the frame 75–73.
