if you could move and set up home in another country from where you currently stay, where would you like to live? (and why?)

How do you know that, Mitsuko? I like Austria and Belgium, but... I am not sure I could live there for long :) I've lived in Denmark for almost a year, it was fun time, but I was happy to return back home.

I'll think about this question, Semih! :)

I often hear people say (including myself) to pack it in and move away. But if one thinks very well there are also a lot of disadvantages (friends and family, all services wich we have over here, missing visiting snooker events etc.).

I would prefer somewhere with a bit more living space (which is a big problem in Holland) and a mild climate with decent summers. I have stayed in Sudan before for 6 months but would not like to stay there at all. If i would move away i should have something useful to do in my new place otherwise it will get boring very quickly. Over the last 1.5 year I got to know my own country much better. I think a lot of people dont even know their own country properly.

Off all the european countries I have been, inland Spain would suit me, around 30 miles from Barcelona. beautiful scenery, relaxed people, quality food, good climate and a great city to visit. A bit further away New Zealand.

Thirdly, Norfolk street in Sheffield. No need to explain this one.

My home town in China (about 1 hour's ride from Shanghai) of 15 years ago should be the most ideal place to live in as per my current opinion; but certainly not now, too much pollution because of development, no more villiages, no more rivers with fish...

San Francisco should be a great option now, not too hot or cold the whole year, close to the sea, and plenty of Chinese people and Chinese restaurants around.

Home is where family and friends are , so i guess home for me could be anywhere in this world as long as they're with me.
I had friends who moved away to live - Canada for example , it's been a mytery to me how they could do that ,leave family and friends behind , i don't think i could. But one can never know, so better never say never.
I've never lived anywhere else than Romania , never even visited other countries so is hard for me to pick a place ,but to answer Sem's Q ,i think i would pick UK , i've always been curious how is to live there (tho it's to rainy for my taste :p ),I've always wanted to visit it more than any other places -maybe because it's a bit more difficult for us to get there than in any other country , and of course snooker is one of the reasons also. :D

Difficult question, I have never thought about it.

Not the UK, great snooker but dont like the food/climate/ale/too crowded.

Perhaps Norway, or to the north of Sweden. Somewhere with lots of space and lots of snow.

To end my contribution. I am not one for staying at one place. Ideally I would like to stay a few months over here and the rest of the year somewhere else, ranging from southern europe up to the pacific ocean.

If I had the money (and the marks) I'd love to study at Oxford after I graduate. But that probably won't happen:(

allright.

number one place for me is Riga, Latvia. always.
I guess I could live anywhere - don' t care about climate so much, rather a place where I feel comfortable among the people, where I have got friends and the loved ones. Planet earth :)

A village in Southern Ireland would be nice but after watching Dumb & Dumber many years ago I've since had a dream of living in aspen, Colorado.

Funny, I was discussing this a couple of days ago.
To me the weather is important, being born and raised in a countery where the winters are mild and the summers are hot but the sea is easily accessible no matter where you live. The people are also important of course.

There was a time when I wouldn't even consider moving abroad. Then I grew up and got another perspective on things.
And last year I seriously considered the possibility of moving to California. One of the things that held me back was my family. And of course before making such a decision that will turn your life around, serious research is a must.

Bottom line for me, I could try to live somewhere else, an English speaking country is somewhere I could survive, but I would always miss home and come back as often as possible. :)

Now if I'm not mistaken, Semih who asked this question to begin with never answered it, isn't it high time he did? ;)

Yes, it's one of those questions that you always think you'd like to live somewhere else but if you had the chance would you really do it!
We have several friends who spend 6 months in the sun every year but I think I would miss home, friends, lifestyle. Having lived in South Africa for 2 years, I loved the outdoor life and the almost guaranteed sunshine and I think Capetown is the only place I'd every consider moving to.

I guess the first point would be to answer yourself - why would you want to move. And then you'd know where to. So simple.

So simple? :)

My first reaction was "cool, warm sunny places", but I instantly changed my mind when I thought of the Greek islands at least. Have you ever been to one in winter? It's cold and dump and most of them are difficult to access except from the big ones. :(

Oops I'm killing the Greek tourism here... let me see how that can be fixed...
So, the bad weather shouldn't turn off someone who lives in Scotland, right? I'm sure anything is Greece can beat the weather there...
As for accessibility, well a foreigner would only consider a big island so no problem there! :D

I'm not saving this am I? Oh well...

Nina, I doubt you can get a full spectre of -37C to +37C within a year like we here in Latvia often do :D And a sea coast of 500km, with only white sand beaches, and rivers and lakes, and woods with animals and birds that are not so widely seen in 'old' Europe any more... Every place is wonderful in it's own way. It's just what makes you choose to go to live somewhere else. There are so many reasons that makes people to do strange decisions, for example like my great-grandparents went from Latvia to Siberia to live there. And reasons to come back too, to Latvia after the 2 world wars, with nowhere to live and no relatives there...

Well, I lived there when I was very young (3-4) for a year, can't really remember much though :D.
If I don't get to stay on in my job in February I will be (hopefully) going on a world tour, staying in Tokyo for a few months with my cousin (who lives there) :D

April my dear, I really really wouldn't want to live in -37C. Honestly, I don't think I could survive. It would be like asking an elephant to live in the Arctic circle.
The coastline... well Greece has about 16,000 km of that since there are about 6,000 islands and islets in the Aegean and Ionian Sea. And (not uniquely), there are beautiful beaches, rivers and lakes and everything else you can find almost everywhere in the world. Beauty has been divided equally to all countries.
It is long since I came to the conclusion that the beauty of a place cannot be the basic criterion for moving. Would you buy a house judging only by the view? I for one have been to amazingly beautiful places from where I couldn't wait to get away, for reasons entirely personal of course. So now I would give moving to another country a second (and a third and a millionth) thought... :)
