tip sizes

hi all

was told the other day in so many words that my 10.2 mm tip was 2 big by my coach......whats size furrel does everyone have?

think mine is about 9.8 size furrel use a 10mm tip have tried cues with smaller furrel/tips but never got on with them so have always found my self going back to 10

Nothing wrong with a tip that big for snooker. What made your coach say that?

i use a 9.5 mm tip, don't see anything wrong with a 10mm tip... as far as i know Matthew Stevens plays with a 10mm tip & Ian McCulloch plays with a 13 mm so your 10.2 mm tip is alright if u're comfortable using it!!!

No, Matthew uses a tip size around 8.5mm in fact! McCulloch is about 11mm. 11mm is about the biggest size you would want to use for snooker, anything bigger, especially on club tables and you would really struggle to get any spin on the cue ball.

As for me, my ferrule is about 9.3mm but I put a 10mm tip on and trim it slightly. It varies for me, my current tip is about 9.75 but I usually try to trim it down to 9.5mm. Its very difficult to trim a tip exactly to the size you want it, more so if your ferrule size is smaller than you want the tip to be.

umm a lot of the info there is just wrong look at the players cues bit! - i can't imagine a snooker pro using a 13mm tip !!

if ians still using the same cue hes had in recent years then its no bigger than 11mm diameter at the widest part of the "mushroom"

i heard from someone that the prefered size favoured by most is about 9.7.

think powerglade did a investigation into it

I only play 8 ball and have just gone from 9mm to 9.5mm due to old age and the change to Blackball rules

Tip size

It seems to me to be more important to have the right diameter shaft than tip.If you go too slender with tip size the cue shaft also has to be and this results in an excessive amount of whip.
On the other hand ,if the diameter becomes too large,it is very difficult to get any reaction from the white without over-hitting.
Most makers seem to have found the compromise to be about 9.5mm.I've recently modified my one piece from 9.0 to 8.0 .In order to try and reduce the flex I have tapered the end of the shaft fairly abruptly,within the last two inches or so.I have only used it for half a dozen frames so far,but it seems OK.

pool magician pro player efree using a pool cue which is also ard 13mm tip size and he made 3 century, really can't imagine
