Newbie question about chamfer on a cue

I want to get a cue custom made, and was wondering why snooker cue's have a chamfer?

I find I hold the cue in such a way with the chamfer facing down, so that I don't feel the flat part.

Since I'm getting one built, I thought it might be easier to have it done plain.

Any disadvantage, other than there would be no place for the name-plate? (where else could I have the nameplate put?)

I believe the chief reason is that it maintains a tradition going back to the times before cues had tips.

The predecessor of the cue is the mace – it was a long shaft of wood, like a cue, but it had a flattened end and the ball was pushed with the mace, rather as a croupier pushes the tokens on a gaming table.

When the cue was developed, the fact that the thin end of the stick was used rather than the thick end renders it a purely cosmetic feature.

Yes but some people have a hole to screw in an extension, so the butt end of the cue is no good...................

Isn't the shamfer there so that you hold the cue in the same place all the time ?

why dont we match this thread and what to stick in your butt thread together why dont we get manufacturers to make the butt plugs with clear rubbery plastic with their names on so that they get their names shown off more on tv and those who want it can have a perfectly round cue with just a quick release butt plug which looks nice(like if people know what i mean where they put the word tribal on shimano carp rods), cos i dont think i would like to stick a blue nun cork in the bottom of my posh cue! and i guess spares then would make people money ?

When your opponents making a ton break and your just sitting there twiddling yer thumbs or picking yer nose get the cork out and give it a suck.

I'm sure it'd taste better than a genuine John Parris butt plug.
