  • Sanding / Varnishing help please!

I have been having a problem with my cue being sticky, so I asked a regular at my club for advice and he recommended that I sand off the varnish, then apply some thick wood polish, leave for 5 minutes, then buff it.

I'm currently at the stage where I've sanded it down with some 400, 800 then 1500 grade wet dry paper, and it feels much better. The problem now is that I'm not sure if I've bought the right stuff from B&Q to polish/buff it. What I have is satin clear quick dry varnish, which says it 'protects, colours and enhances interior wood'.

Can anyone advise me on whether I should leave my cue as it is, feeling much smoother, or if having stripped off the varnish the cue is now vulnerable to warping with moisture getting into it? Or should I apply this varnish that I have, or do I have the wrong stuff and need to go out and buy something different?

    Thanks in advance...

i wouldnt use the stuff youve bought.

best to look through the threads on here in the cues section, and take info on cue care from them, as theres been quite a few and most, if not all, is very good advice.

    good luck

do not use that - take it back to B&Q and replace it with RAW linseed oil

ADR, if it's an ash cue, and the grain ends up 'open' after sanding, should it be filled with something before being treated with linseed oil?

...and if so, should it be coloured?

it depends how much sanding has been done but raw linseed oil will never hurt it! - for a long time i have tried to avoid explaining how to strip and refinish or straighten a cue on the forum because i don't want to get the blame when somebody ruins their cue! in this case i think if the cue had been over sanded and the grain effeced he would have seen it and pointed it out so i assume just the oil will be fine or maybe mix a little raw linseed oil with pure beeswax over boiling water the same way you melt chocolate and use the waxy paste to seal the cue in (after it has cooled).

personal taste, but if he had removed the colour of the grain he would have noticed - sounds like he has sanded just the right amount off.

                uh-oh...

After the first reply I went looking through the previous threads, but couldn't find much useful, so I went ahead and applied a coat of the stuff I bought, left it 5 minutes, then buffed vigourously.

It feels ok, but now I've seen these comments recommending me not to use it I'm wondering whether I should wait a while and strip it off again? I won't play again until Tuesday, so I could wait and see how it plays, or would it have damaged the cue by then?

It's an ash cue by the way...
                Thanks

                          thanks

any ideas on the stuff i've just put on it?
should I wait and see how it plays or just wait a few hours for it to dry fully then strip it straight off?

if it was me, and i was in your position, id strip it off and treat it with linseed (raw) or beeswax, as soon as you can source some.
