  • Cocking the wrist

    Hi,

One of the most elusive stroking elements is wrist flicking.

This leads me to a couple of questions:

    1) Does the wrist flick both back and forward, or back to closed?

What I mean is does it go all the way back and then return to its default middle position or all the way back and then all the way forward?

    2) I reckon the answer to 1) is yes, but on my final stroke on a shot which would need say deep screw, would I snap the wrist with a bit more conviction from its back position rather than gently cocking the wrist back and forth?

I'm trying to fit all this into my now regular practise. I did see a video on youtube by some snooker coach on wrist cocking but, as informative as it was, it didn't answer everything for me.

    Thanks

Whenever i do that, it is when i need to do a big screw shot, most often i fail, but the way i do it is, do your normal strokes, with a bit of wrist movement, then stop, and flick your wrist forward with minimal arm movement, it gives you power, and accuracy.

As you pull the cue back use the first finger and thumb. The wrist will cock automatically. As you cue through the white drop your elbow and the wrist will uncock and the cue should go onto the back fingers of the hand. This gives you the power in the shot with minimum effort. My site at www.snookercoaching.net shows the grip in detail. You can also look on frank callans website. Hope this helps.

Speaking for myself, I think cocking the wrist helps you to keep the cue in a straight line on power shots especially. It also helps to keep the cue as level as possible.
I would suggest you try to shot the ball up and down the brown blue pink black spot to get a feel for the timing of opening and closing of the hand. When you try to make the cue ball go three rails or more, opening up the hand at the end will help the cue to go much straighter, with much more consistency. Cocking the wrist will come naturally once you start to open and close your grip with good timing.
I dont try to think about flicking my wrist though, I just think of opening and closing my elbow, the rest just come naturally--on a good day at least. When my timing is off, I will start crossing the ball, and I know I am not opening my grip correctly.

              hello del,

              How are things going?

As you can see I am using the methods you teach at the academy. I have heard good things about your snooker farm but i didnt put your site on my post above cos I knew that there are no photos etc about the wrist cock. Dont worry I have been biggin you up big time since we met and I would like to thank you again for a great 2 days. Hopefully we will meet up again soon and have a in depth chat about the game.

              take care mate
