  • Grip & Cue Question

    Hi guys,

Ive read and have noticed alot players grip there cue with the flat side of the butt facing upwards.

I personally play with it facing downwards as its basically what feels most comfortable to me.

Is this a problem and does it make any difference?

Is there a reason most people play with it facing up?

    Cheers,

    Nick

Its totally up to you... Play the way you feel comfortable. I hold the flat side with my fingers. The only disadvantage of playing every single shot one way (concerning the flat side) is that the tip gets worn out just from one side which ends up as a slight bump on the tip...

As long as you deliver the cue straight through the white it makes little difference. I have the flat part of the butt facing towards me with my fingers on it and that's what feels good to me.

You'll probably find a lot of players will turn the cue to where the arrows or straight lines are on their shaft, regardless of the position of the butt. Of course if you were buying a good custom built cue you could specify where the arrows or lines would be in relation to the butt...

I hold it with the flat side on the left side, which is closest to my body. If i grip the cue diferently then i don't feel comfortable at all.

Same as myself, except I play left handed. I use a knife and for the left handed way, but I write with my right hand, and was a orthodox stance fighter. I heard recently that Ronnie is the exact same, strangely enough.

Most of the cues have the arrows lined up with the flat side facing upward, so a lot of players tend to hold their cues that way.
Another thing I can think of is when the cue has a slight warpage, you may want to find out at which orientation the cue is straight and hold it at that orientation.
Some players believe the amount of "throw" will be more consistent if the cue is held the same way everytime the ball is striked.
I dont really line up the arrows, but I alway hold me cue the same way somehow, I just dont feel comfortable when I am not.

My cue has no "flat bit" or chamfer at all.

I hate the flat bit! lol.

Plus it's maple, so there are no arrows.

Therefore I probably hold it in a different spot every shot.
