  • Understanding the natural path of the white

(Originally posted to snooker questions but felt it was more appropriate here.)

This may be a dumb question but does anyone have any tips on understanding the natural path (plain ball) the white will take after striking the object ball. I have always had a massive problem understanding this. I know what general direction its going in but cannot see the line that it will take is this just learned with practice or are their any tips you can give. I have been playing for years and I dont seem to be getting any better at judging the path

I have noticed on tv the commentators seem fully aware what path the white will take.

    Cheers for any help
    Mike

      I had this problem too.
For me it was very difficult to understand, and to practice, because when playing I never knew if the white ball had any back or forward-spin when hitting the object ball.
So, when I tried 5 times the same shot the white ball was on 5 different posicions after hitting the object ball.

A good practice for me, to understand what will happen to the white ball was (shame on me *g*) playing computer snooker.
      I used "iSnooker"
With this program you can do several times the exact same shot, once as stun, than light, medium or hard draw, ...... and you automatically see what happens with the white ball.
And when you understand what happens on the computer-table, you will also understand what happens when you practice on a real table AND if the white ball follows a complete other way on your snookertable than on the computer-table, something is wrong with your shot .

And then you know what to practice :snooker:

Its very simple the more often you play. The only advice I can give you is practice practice practice. Trial and error my friend.
Always play snooker with a smile on your face...You never know when you'll pot your last ball.

Take up Billiards you soon get a good idea of the run of the cue ball, you learn to recognize all the basic angles of the ball (half, quarter ball etc) and its a great help with getting out of snookers and just general stuff like getting the ball between reds to get back to bauk

With positioning in billiards its all about where the cue ball is going initially. I thought I knew what was going on with this in snooker but after trying to play billiards it really shows you how precise you need to be.
