Short of trying various lengths, is there a rule of thumb on how long a cue should be for any given player?

Good rule of thumb is: does it feel comfortable when you play?
Another one: it's better to have your cue too long than too short.


By the way, is it for you that you're asking? If so, how tall are you? How long are your arms?

Up to your shoulder was the old saying but what ever you feel best with is right.

The standard 57-58" is fine for most people. Cue length is one of those things you can start to think too much about. Try not to start chopping down and lengthening cues it ends in tears!

it mostly depends on the height and cueing action of the player,im 6 feet tall and use am comfortable with 58" its fraction short,but i like to hold the cue right at the end.

Same here, it "feel"s so wrong holding further up the butt. And my natural habit is to grab the end of the butt no matter how long/short the cue is, this affects my cueing dramaticaly cause i use house cues that vary by length all the time.
Thats why i'm settling for a 55 1/2" cue, which will be right for me.
I'm 5ft 7" btw.
Oh 55 1/2" the tip will come up to my shoulder level.

I am 5 feet 10.5 inches and play with 147cm, fraction shorter than 58". feels perfect, only when I play this soft shots around the black and pink, I tend to grip the cue closer to the joint. As Keith mentioned, this is good example why it's better to have your cue too long than too short

Just taken some approx measurements and I'm approx 1.8 meters tall (6ft). My height to my armpit (As it seems some seem to use this as a benchmark) is 1.4 meters (4ft 6in) and the length of my arm from armpit to finger tip is 74cm (2ft 5in).

Currently I have a 58" cue...

I'm not neccessarily looking for a new cue as I love mine but was (a) slightly interested and (b) found a cue I quite like (Though liking something and buying something are very different!!) but it is only 55"...

I was wondering if 55" would be okay, or if that would be really too short.

Any ideas? Any other rules of thumb?

1.8 meters with 55" cue sounds too short...but if you felt good with it then you have an answer...
I am 1.79 and play with 58" . when I try sometimes mates cues which are 57" they all feel very short for me. but its really personal choice.

That would be far to short for you.

Where is this cue at as i'm interested and looking for a snooker cue that length.

Think you should stick to around 58"

Can i ask why people measure themselved in metres and then list the length of their cue in inches??? seems very strange to me

I'm a youngun' and use SI Units but quoted the cue in inches as it seems that it is "industry standard" if you will.

You can tell a student when they reference everything they know from wikipedia

Circuit boards are still listed in inches... Inches forever!!!

Just want to add that the bridge length and how square/sideway a player stances will also play a big part in his preferred cue length. Also, I think balance point plays a part in it as well.

Is there any way to get a feel for how a shorter cue would feel short of simply trying one? I think all of the ones my club are the same and don't know anybody with a shorter cue.

My logic/head is telling me it is a bad idea... Because I have no better basis to work from than the feedback here which suggests that it is not a good idea... But a part of me is still interested in checking it out. Bad move!

Any feedback would be great
