  • Hello from western Canada

Hi everyone, I've been lurking for a few months and finally decided to get involved in the discussions. Great forum, lots of good information here. I've played pool, 8-ball and snooker, for most of life. I took a decade or so off to raise my kids and I recently decided to join a local snooker league and get back to the game I love.

Welcome Cateran. I'm one of the on-line coaches here and also the President of the Ontario Association so if you have any questions regarding the Canadian scene I can certainly help or at least put you in contact with the person who can.

When you say 'Western' Canada could you let us know which city? For the Canadian Snooker Championships we are always looking for more players, especially from out west as last year they sere sadly under-represented.

      Cheers,
      Terry

          Welcome Cateran...
You're in good company, especially since many of us have done exactly the same!

          Cheers!

I’m located on the Sunshine Coast, which is around a two-hour trip from Vancouver – a 50 minute ferry ride and the balance driving.

              Here’s a link to the league website - http://coastsnooker.com/

Do you know of any coaches out here?

I saw a post about a new Riley table and picture of a backyard site for a snooker room, was that your post? If so, it looks like you’re in the valley – and you’re about three hours from where I live.

                  Bob1:

OK, BC it is I guess. The Canadians will likely be in Ontario somewhere but as I'm not a member of the CBSA Executive I'm not aware of any details.

I had heard 2 of the bids were planning on holding the snooker in a hotel ballroom but I haven't heard if any bids have been accepted by the CBSA as yet.

I think Shooters will be the 'fall back' location if the CBSA can't come up with the cash to set up 4 or 6 tables in a hotel ballroom, although I think there's a good offer on the table from the host hotel from the last championships.

We need players from BC, as there was only one at the last one. One of our players, Michael Ma, has bought a club in Vancouver and he is hoping to hold some qualifiers for the Canadians. Of course the problem is the travel expenses and that can prove to be expensive.

Cateran-in case you can't find a coach out there handy to you I am a certified IBSF Master Coach and I do video analysis for my students. You would need a good video camera and be able to make up a DVD and mail it to me. I would then analyse it using a sports analysis software system (Dartfish) and send you back the analysed DVD with commentary and drills/exercises added. I charge $50hr and would give you a set series of shots and how to set up the camera shots and this type of analysis would take somewhere around 3hrs. I would cover the postage back to you

Welcome Cateran, I hope you enjoy yourself.

So, you're another one who was able to let go for a wee while, only to find the siren call of snooker irresistible in the long run, eh? Welcome to that club too!

Well I'd love to take you up on that, Terry, but any extra money that I have is currently being squirreled away into an account for a new snooker cue. That being said, I'll definitely keep your offer in mind.

Aren't there many pool halls with snooker tables in Vancouver any more?

                              Hi Folks,

                              Another newbie from Western Canada!

Originally from Scotland, but lived in Canada for 8 years now. I miss the coverage of Snooker from the UK, but still try to keep in touch with happenings as best I can.

These days, I am mainly involved in online Snooker/Pool and enjoy meeting people of similar interest.

                              All the best,
