More talisman problems

bought two talisman soft tips earlier this week , both 11mm put one on the other night and went for a knock tonight , alls well to start with then i started to get the dreaded tinny sound like the tips loose, had a good look at the tip and it had started to delaminate about two or three layers up from the ferrule, now the thing is i play with a mushroom tip as my ferrule is just under 10mm and the tip is 11mm.. is this why i am having a problem with talisman tips delaminating,,,is the overhang on the tip causing this coz this is the 3rd or 4th time now in the last couple of months, any body else having problems or am i just unlucky ,,,,

i dont touch it at all ,, just put it on and play ,, it still chuffing delaminates !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can someone make me a decent 11mm or 10.5mm tip please ,,are you listening mike wooldridge or stu at green baize with the granite tips ,,, please please please

I was fed up with elkmasters and changed to a medium talisman tip and had no problems but when i needed to change it again the tip was rock hard and i got no feeling from it . it set my game back a bit as well. just got a new cue with an elkmaster fitted superbly by the cuemaker and will use that until it wears out . Then i will try the MW supertips as i've heard good things about them on this forum.

With regards to talismans i can only assume by the complaints i've read about them that they have possibly made a bad batch .

Also i had my 2nd tip put on by a cuemaker and i'm wondering whether they may have been in his workshop for sometime and that the cold has affected them in some way.Not sure really . i wonder if a rep from Talisman would be able to shed any light .Someone on this forum might know one.

I have had 3 Talisman Soft tips purchased from poolqjunkie on here and I haven't had any problems with them at all. They last for months (I play every day for 4 hours minimum) and I haven't had any de-lamination.

I've also just received some O'min hard tips from unclevit on here and that will be the next tip I try once this Talisman wears out. These are layered but do not come apart buth they are HARD!!! But the hit is great with them as I have one on an O'min cue I ordered from unclevit and the tip plays very well.

When I installed my own Talisman I do not cut the tip "upside down" with a blade. I trim it very quickly on my lathe, and then I put a tiny bit of super glue on a toothpick and I coat the rim of the tip with a very thin layer of super glue. (You can tape the ferrule first if you are worried that you may make the ferrule dirty or messy with the glue. ) I then polish the tip and the ferrule very briefly and I am done.

The super glue on the rim makes the tip looks better, and it stops moisture from entering the gaps between the layers.

When I file the tip I only go down, never up.

That is pretty much it.

I believe also that if you use M or H it will have a lesser chance to delaminate because it has been compressed harder before it comes out from the factory.

If you really want a tip with the least chance of delamination, buy a Moori (better yet, try to get M rather than S). Moori is known to hold its layers together better than any other tips. Whether you would like the way it plays is a matter of personal taste.

I have asked Mike for some of his tips as I would love to try them. I heard they are great.

Terry , my 1st tip was ok but i was playing all time. I think the issue is that they seem to go hard when you don't play all the time . You are playing every day which i believe helps the Talisman tip.

Had the same problem but with medium 11mm Talismans. after few days of hard practice my tip started delaminate please see attached pick. same thing happened to next tip but right in the middle of the match ( unlucky). third tip was donated to my mate and myself back to using Supertips so here we go ...£15 spent wisely BTW my tip was cut flush with ferule , only one thing came to my mind " bad Batch"

My mate fitted a talisman pro hard on my cue on sunday night, my first full session with it was last night and I have got to say im very impressed, solid feel all the time im just lacking the touch in about the balls with it which will come eventually. Havent noticed any de-laminating but will keep my eyes open

Thanks for info on how to fit them pooljunkie. One thing i've found though with my pro
soft, it doesen't seem to accept chalk easily. I'm always worried about miscueing
anyone else found this ?

I will try to clear up some of the Problems people have had with their Talismans.
It is very important to fit them properly.
You should prepare the tip and ferrule as you would do with every other tip.
Once glued in place, Use a brand new blade and proceed to cut round the tip and not down(similar as you would sharpen a pencil) do not cut down on the tip as this will increase the chance of the tip de-laminating.
Always sand from top of tip down, to the desired shape.
Once you have the shape you want, it is recommended you then burnish the tip. Pooljunkie has said he uses a lathe to do this.
The idea of burnishing the tip is to heat up the sides and stop the tip from separating.
I know most people don't have a lathe so may i suggest instead using a smooth piece of paper or the rear of some emery paper or the cloth on the cushions on a table.
use a lighter or match to create a bit of heat if you wish but do be careful and don't apply for long or the tip will shrink.
I would normally make the sides of the tip slightly damp(by wetting my finger and rubbing into the tip) and proceed to burnish tip as above, i prefer rubbing the tip along the cushions of a snooker table and keep turning cue as you do. The heat from this should burnish the side wall of tip and prevent any delamination.

good advice - a strip of leather or a bank note work well.

Yes Andrew, i always carry a Romanian note with me. I know that sounds mad but the notes made there are like Australian notes, in that they are like a laminated material not like our bank notes but they work good too.
