  • Tip Problems - Should I Try a Different One?

hey guys, just a relatively quick question here about my tip:
basically, it doesn't seem to hold chalk properly, I'll chalk it nicely but then realise that most of it is actually loose on the top of the tip meaning that when I blow on it all I'm left with is some uneven 'blueness' underneath that doesn't completely cover the surface of the tip. any ideas why?
the tip is an elkmaster that was prefitted on my mastercraft that I received a month ago
also generally I reckon I could do with something a bit softer maybe as I don't really like the way it feels when I hit a shot. I'm not too sure though, any recommendations for a new tip? I was looking at the MW ones as well as talismans, but I have no idea what the differences between laminated and pressed tips are

    thanks :snooker:

Are you sure it,s an elkmaster , if so then give it a few light rubs with sandpaper , if your still having problems then it,s probably time for a new one . I,ve never found elks to be too hard .

Are you using good chalk or pheraps your chalk has got damp , triangle chalk is the best .

If you dont want a hard tip then the M W supertips may be a good choice for you , and seem preety close to elks in terms of hardness .

Laminated tips are made from several layers that are glued together and pressed tips are solid .

      cheers for the reply
well I was told by neil @ maximumbreak.com that it was an elk, however I'm not too sure to be honest.
I like the sound of the MWs, may give them a try if the sandpaper doesn't do the trick.
what tip do you use and how does it feel?
      thanks

Had a couple of Mastercue tips from a selection pack and think they're great, don't seem to change much in firmness unlike other pressed tips like elks which start off soft then go hard, might get a box of 50. Anyone else tried them?

oh right that's real surprising (that you don't play anymore) you seem really knowledgable in all your posts
thanks for the tips will look at the MWs a little more closely.
you had any experiences with talisman tips?

oh right, I think what I have now is too hard but on the other hand I have not much to compare it to I do like the idea of a softer tip though, any recommendations?

you had any experiences with talisman tips?

No mucka , i used to play regular just have nt bothered for five years .

No i have,nt tried Talisman but when i do start playing i intend to try them all .

I always like to cut a few mm off the bottom of my tips to save the hassle of knoocking them in , they stay firm and dont need to be shaped that way .

actually scrap that, I'll do it myself it's a learning curve aha
what glue do you use mate?

I use superglue gel muck . Ye if your gonna have a go yourself i,d go for elks or BD s , the others can be expensive if you balls it up . As long as the cue and tip are flat and clean you should be ok , the hardest part is getting it smack center .

You can get vitalbond whick is like superglue but doe,nt set for 20 seconds which gives you more time .

No if i trim the bottom the they dont need shaping i just give them a very light rub to make sure the chalk sticks well , with something like 300 grit , but not taking anything off the tip just a light downwards rub thats all .
