  • Advice on new tip

Hi all, I've been using Elk's for years, then discovered Talisman tips. Gave them a go (M) and thought they felt like stones on the top of my cue at first, but after they had bedded in for a bit, they seemed to soften up and I loved them. My main gripe with them, is that they constantly needed roughing up and when I forgot to, I started mis-cueing the white quite a bit.

Finally, I entered into my first tournament last Sunday, and when cleaning down my cue the day before, discovered my tips layers had started to split... didn't have any more left, so resorted to an Elk and found my cue ball control all over the place.

Could anyone recommend a tip I should go for? I'm liking the sound of the Kamui Black M 11mm. For my style of play, I never like to strike the ball hard, so like a tip that can offer lots of spin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi Willytan, I know there are quite a few posts, and I've read the majority of them, but I was looking for other people's views on tips, based upon the fact that the Talisman M suited my game.

I was a little put off by it shining up so quickly and it splitting, so basically to find what others would say would be a similar tip, that would keep better grip, hold chalk better, but play similarly to the Talisman.

Thanks for that. How do you find the wear of the Pro Granite tips? Do they shine up easily? And do they hold their shape well?

That's what I liked about the Talisman's, ie, that they held their shape well... but did my head in with how often I had to roughen them up lol

Look out for the new Talisman tips that are made from cow hide. they offer all the benefits of a pressed tip in terms of grip as the leather is rougher in texture, but they also keep shape like the other laminated tips.

Cheers Doc, I've emailed ADR147 on ebay to see what he has in stock at the moment that I could try. I never imagined how much of a difference the tip would have made to my game, with normally stuggling to make 30's on a regular basis, but since trying the Talisman M, I've been knocking in regular 40's and 50's, so only really started getting my confidence back.

Hopefully once I find the right tip for me... those breaks will soon increase to hopefully beat my all time high of 86 (stupidly went in off on 87 lol)

haha... nice answer... and good to hear... loving the Davis / Higgins match myself.

As I said on eBay, the 3-4 weeks for an elk is cause I don't like the tip worn too down too much... so after about 4 or 5 roughing up's on an elk, I replace it.

Would really like to get some Pro Granites, H2's (if you think they're as good as the others), maybe another Talisman S and M, and the new Talisman's when they arrive and a Kamui or two when they arrive in. Is ebay the easiest way to buy these off you?

I think you'll find all laminated tips shine up,with the possible
exeption of the new talismans mentioned by the doc.
As I havnt tried them as they're not available to buy yet
I can't offer an opinion on those, but as I've said in other
threads I think the kamui 11mm tips are the best laminated
tips I've tried, never had one de laminate and grip the White
                        well even when shiny.
Like you I also rough up the tip I do it before every time
I play, and the still seem to last well as they only need a
really light sand to stop them being shiny
