  • New member in need of some help!

Am wanting to start playing regularly and improve my game. I have a riley signature cue had it for a few years now, cost me about £40 used it to play pool every so often. the tip needs replacing as it has seen better days. dont know if i should buy a new tip, but have no idea which to buy medium, hard, soft. can anyone help?

    thanks Dan

I am not sure if anyone would be able to help you just like that as the type of the tip is based on personal preference...

The tip best for one man might be not the best for you ...

You can try all the types and find the best one for you or if you don't want to take the test and find out way just go ahead with the medium one now and than slowly try to experiment later...

Maybe some of the quality players over here would be able to give you a better suggestion if you mention your play style
Whoever called snooker 'chess with balls' was rude, but right

Best thing you can do is try several tips to see which you like. The tip is the second most important part of a cue next to the cue itself because it can greatly affect "touch" or "feel" which this game relies on having.

Classical theory suggests a soft tip (like an Elkmaster, Moori soft, Blue Diamond, and perhaps Aurora tips). Soft tips have more "throw" and harder tips have less throw. Harder tips might be better for long pots because your cue ball doesn't veer much off course (assuming your cue action is straight). On the other hand, soft tips are preferred for the close and precise stun shots, screws, and precise positional play when you are "in the balls". Harder tips aren't as good for close play (but then again, it comes down to personal preference.). John Higgins plays with a super hard tip (as far as I know) so it's totally astounding he has touch, control and can pull of all the delicate and precise shots!

Most importantly: do your own tip installs and if you aren't comfortable doing them, go to the club and ask someone to teach and show you how!
