  • Pool table BRUSH

Could somebody tell me why the brush bristles are cut the way they are. Being long on both ends and short in the middle makes it so you hav to push down hard to get the middle bristles to contact the cloth. This means uneven pressure when sweeping and excessive ware on the cloth.

The ends of the brush are elongated in order to get dust etc from under the cushions.... If you brush your table in a 'sweeping motion' with the brush angled, you'll find it easier to brush the middle of the table with the shorter middle bristles. Also, use a napping block (I stock these - PM me if you're struggling to obtain one) to push the nap down prior to ironing...Hope this helps...Dave, Snookerpoolman

I dont think you are supposed to really push the middle of the brush down...
The sides are longer so you can take the dirt out from under the cushions.

Kinda missed the point, it takes extra downward force to get the middle bristles to work and wears the cloth out faster. I know that is the way it has always been done but I'm asking why? Cleaning under the rails can be done with a flat brush if the bristles are long enough. And what's more important, a well groomed playing surface or clean under the rails. I find the traditional pool table brush uncomfortable to use because it seems like only the long bristled ends are doing the work and hav to push down to get the middle into the action and then it seems like only the edge of the brush is making good contact. I've used a lot of different brushes and they are all the same. Also you must vacuum under the rails at the ends of the table to avoid the taboo of brushing in any other direction other than with the nap so also it wouldn't hurt to vacuum under all the rails. Seems like to much effort in making the brush has gone into cleaning under the rails, but then, after all the pool table brush was designed before the vacuum cleaner was invented.

Can just a level brush be bought? One without the extra long bristles at each end would do.

you could always just buy a normal brush and cut the longer bristles to the same length as the shorter bristles

I found the best brush is off an old electrolux vacuum cleaner who were known for their superior brushes and other good things. I am very tempted to give our "pool table brush" a good brush cut now that I realize how stupid and useless the pool table brush design is. Have you checked out the price of a good table brush, not cheap and by design they are much harder on the cloth and must wear it out faster.
