  • Free ball rule clarification please

Only the colours left on the table, i foul and give a free ball
Can my opponent choose black as a yellow and then plant the black onto the yellow and pot it ??
I think he can, but luckily he was not sure so he played a different shot and i ended up winning the frame

i think he can because the black was nominated as a yellow

Thanks, we knew for certain you could plant a free ball colour onto a red and pot that, but just unsure on planting colour onto colour

If when you play the shot described the black also goes in it is still not a foul. The black come back on its spot . There is one occasion when you may snooker behind the object ball in a free ball situation and knowledge of this exception to the rule can be a frame winner. Sure many of you know. Look forward to the answer. F.

When just the pink and black left on table it is ok to snooker behind free ball

The thing to remember when nominating a free ball is that it must be the first ball the cue ball contacts, so in the OP's scenario it is fine to plant the plack onto the yellow.

What wouldn't be allowed though is to nominate black, because it is right on the edge of a pocket, with yellow in front of it nearer the cue ball and hitting the yellow onto the black to pot it.

Where ball on is a colour if both ball on and free ball are potted, just the value of the ball on is scored. The ball on stays down, and the free ball is spotted.

And you can use the black to pot the pink, then pot black, and you,ve won. Funny old game!!!!!.

Just another question regarding the free ball.Happened last night where a player was given a free ball & got down & hit the green ball.Referee gave a foul because he didn't nominate. The player argued he didn't nominate because it obvious what he was hitting.Who is right please.

If the green ball was the only colour in the area he was aiming for, then yes surely it is obvious and foul should not be called. But if other colours are in the same area then maybe always best to nominate to stop over zealous refs

If it is quite obvious to his opponent, the spectators and the referee it is not necessary under most circumstances to nominate. A good referee may if he is unsure ask the striker to nominate (particularly in a touching ball situation) in order that there can be no dispute.
As to who is right and in the circumstances described my personal feeling is in good old fashioned football parlance "The referees' a w----r.

The Ref, ALWAYS nominate a free ball even if it is obvious which one you're going for.

A player does not always have to verbally nominate, if, in the opinion of the referee, it is obvious as to which ball he is attempting to hit. However, to be certain, it is always advisable to verbally nominate your free ball.
