  • Need help about foul on the black.

Hi guys this is my first post and i have had a look at some other posts. Question is i played a snooker match the other night and i was behind and potted the brown, blue and pink then missed the black and potted the white. the foul made it al square. I know that it was not frame over as the scores where the same but my question is why does the black get respotted as it was not potted?? Just wondering as its eating me up lol. Thanks

first foul on the black ends the game, as the game then resulted in a tie, it is decided by a re spotted black is my understanding.
No one is listening until you make a mistake!

You can only score once for the final black, be it pot or foul - unless it's then a tie, as in your case, when the re-spot takes place.

The reason it's done, I think, is to remove the possibility of you fouling, then a bit later your opponent fouling, then you foul again and the game never comes to an end. It is possible! Also, it stops you playing on when 8 behind in the vain hope that you'll get a snooker behind the jaw of the pocket or your opponent gets so bored he misses it altogether!

And just to clarify some popular misconceptions about what happens when the scores are level with only the black on the table after a foul or potting the final black:
          • black is placed on its spot
          • cue ball is played from in-hand, not where it had come to rest
          • players toss for who has choice as to whether to play first

The rules state that if the black, being the only ball left, is fouled then the game finishes. As the foul brought the scores level, the black is re-spotted in the same way as it would have been if it had been potted to bring the scores level.
