  • Canadian Snooker Players

Was I right or did my eyes decieve me. Watching the WSC yesterday a pop-up came on the screen asking which country outside UK has had the most players in the WSC ?
The answer came up as Canada with either 13 or 15 players.
OK, here goes... Kirk Stevens, Cliff Thorburn, Alain Robidoux,Bill Werbunuik, Jim Wych, and Bob Chaperon. These are the ONLY Canadian Professionals I can think of, so how did the BBC come up with 15 or 13 ?

Add in a few more like: Brady Gollan, Marcel Gauvreau, Mario Morra, John Bear gets to 10 that have played at crucible.

Are there any more I have missed and perhaps there was some canadians who played before 1977?

          George Chenier

1948-1970 - North American Snooker Champion
1950 - Second Place, World Championships (should read losing semi finalist)
1963 - World Pocket Billiard championship title
          - Ran the first ever perfect game of 150, beating reigning world champion at the time.
          - Ran 144 in a world tournament, the longest run ever from a break.

Don't believe John Bear ever played at the crucible as it was moved there in 1977. Jimmy Bear lost to Fred Davis in the qualifying rounds in 1988
Frank Jonik was registered but did not play and Gino Rigitano played that year.

Terry was never a pro but did play on the pro-am circuit in the late 80's in England. You can add John White and Tom Finstad during the crucible years but neither ever qualified for the TV stages at the Curcible.

Ray Saunders and Dave Boone never turned pro as I know both quite well. They went over to play in the Pontin's festivals I believe.

In the 80's there was a Canadian Prop 'tour' which had 16 members but I'm not sure I can come up with all the names. Gino Riggitano(sp?) was another pro who played out of Bert Demarco's club in Edinburgh when I was in Scotland. Peter Kippie was also there and won the Scottish Amateur Championships just before Hendry but I don't believe Peter ever turned pro
