What is the most amount Snookers that have been scored in a ranking match

  • #2
Do you mean the number of snookers gained in a frame to go on to win it?

If so, it is probably the British Open (I think) in the early 80s when Jimmy White made a break of 74 leaving I think only 3 reds (but possibly 4) on the table. John Spencer carried on and John Pulman, commentating, said, ironically as it turned out, "I'm sure John is coming back to the table not with any intention of winning the frame, just to [get his cue arm going and knock Jimmy's rhythm]."

Spencer duly got a couple of snookers, inclunding one with the last red near the side cushion in baulk in which White incredibly managed to send the cue-ball through the narrow gap around the back, and eventually stole the frame with a free ball on the last red and a 40ish clearance.

I wish I could give you the web source I got this from a few years ago, but I can't.

Sometime in 1985, during the the 1985-86 season there was a ranking tournament called the Goya / Matchroom International at Stoke-on-Trent at Trentham Gardens. Cliff Thorburn won over Jimmy White 12-10.

This is the note I copied and pasted in my excel spreedsheet under the heading "Notes":
"In the 1985 final, Cliff Thorburn came back from needing a record seven snookers in a frame."

Even in copying this now - my mind is numb. To do this is unbelievable. That someone would have the balls to attempt it (and the foolishness this would entail with the inevitable failure) is ......... I don't get it.

I've got to try to find the source of this or get some confirmation.

I have the Snooker Scene edition which would have covered this tournament so I'll read up on it.

I know in the English Professional Championship in the early 1980s, Willie Thorne made a break of 80 and went on to lose the frame. (Of course, he may have had a few fould before he started so it doesn't necessarily mean a record number of snookers were needed. Nevertheless, I believe this holds the record for highest break in a losing frame.) Again I'll look it up and report back.

I found the link where the Thorburn 7 snookers was mentioned.
It was on www.snooker.org. under Scottish Open tournament.
