  • Any routines to help keeping concentration??

I've always suffered with being able to concentrate for long periods of time when I used to play snooker 20+ years ago.

I now play UK Pool and noticed that it's even worse than it used to (getting old!). I find that I can't play as quick as I used to and need to concentrate hard otherwise I make silly mistake and miss occasional easy pots which is partly to blame I guess.

Not a problem in my league matches as they are either 1 or 2 frames only but was wanting to enter competitions where each round is best of 7, so will know I will suffer!

In truth I'm struggling to find that natural game that I used to have when I used to play where the potting angles and angle of cue ball after contact would be near second nature so now have to do a little analysis before each shot.

I guess it's not a bad thing to have a pre-routine before I get down to the shot to do find it draining to have to concentrate that hard for each shot.

Last night I was playing at my local club (winner stays on) and started off very well but after frame 5 I was really struggling and could sense how each shot was becoming more difficult and was lucky to stay on winning (more that they lost the game than me winning it). I ended up having to stop playing after about frame 7 as I was not enjoying it.

Anyone else have this problem? Have you found anything to help improve this area?

it may be worth trying to use a 'dummy' as Del Hill likes to call them. A dummy being a part of your technique to focus on to help keep you in the zone. If i feel my concentration going i try and say to myself "make sure you have a nice front pause" and this on its own can give me a focal point and get my cue action working again. I've spoke to a pro who's been in the top 50 for years who uses the same dummy if he's not timing the ball properly...

Thanks. Might have to give the front pause thing a try
