  • concentrating on breaks far to much!

    Hi Guys,

This is my first post and basically to keep it short and sweet.

I started playing again 2-3 months ago in my Local snooker league.

I've won 7 out of 8 frames so far but had no real breaks!

I'm capable of 50-60 + breaks but I seem to be concentrating too hard on big breaks in my matches.

Numerous times I am in the balls and the break never happens!!

By thinking of breaks all the time you are getting ahead of yourself. You will see a chance and think that you should make 50. Instead you need to stay in the present. Play it ball by ball and if the chance is there it will come but don't force it. Stick to your routine and don't let your mind wander to what breaks you should or shouldn't get.

If you've won 7 out of 8 frames you're doing something right!

Just remember John Higgins got to be world no 1 and world champion before he ever had a 147, and that you win a frame with 2x20's and 1x30 as well as 1x70.
I often use large words I don't really understand in an attempt to appear more photosynthesis.

Well unless you're a ROS, else I wouldn't suggest that you think about getting a big break before you even start potting some balls.
Breaks normally happen when we least expect it. I don't mean that we don't aspire to make it, just that we should just concentrate on the process of potting and getting position on our next few shots.
It's alike aiming to get a good grade in your exam. Just need to make sure that you do your questions to the best of your ability, and your grades will reflect the results. No point wanting to get a good grade but forgetting to ensure the basics are done ya?

Also, the number of points you score doesn't necessarily reflect how well you pot.

For example, you could get 3 easy reds and 3 easy blacks - score 24. Compare this with 3 difficult reds all with yellows - score 9.

I know snooker's about manoeuvring yourself to score as highly as possible, but it's easy to become obsessed with the break score in itself, not the quality of how it's made up.

I think it's easy in snooker as well as other cue sports to focus too much on high breaks and high runs. Of course you're ability often goes hand in hand with high runs, but more often than not it's best to judge your ability based on how much you win as well as who you can beat without a spot. Not every layout is conducive to high breaks, at least not for most of us.

I don't think breaks matter if you can do the most perfect safeties, even from snookers. That said, you can win any frame instantly with one initial break of 60-70 points... For that, you can do drills and make breaks during practice... Even finish the colours for clearing the table .. Try the line drill at different spots ( Black, pink blue brown etc ) .. Then try the top and bottom rail drills .. then try the red only in center pocket drills etc etc ... until you can make at least 60-70 in every drill and almost every time .. Then automatically, you will make these points in almost every game .. Good luck !!
