  • a wasted 30 years

HI, I joined the forum a couple of weeks ago but hung fire till now to post.
Having played snooker as a boy but being rubbish i gave it up for years, now my boy has grown we looked around for something to do together and stumbled on the idea of a few frames of snooker together, although being rubbish i always enjoyed and followed snooker so we gave it a go, now the years were not kind and i was as bad as ever, and as before i chopped and change my stance, convinced myself i wasnt cueing straight, and all the old frustrations came back, so much so that i thought, thats it im going to see someone and if there is no hope i am packing it in.
That someone ended up being Jim Donnely in Glasgow, my son and I booked a full day between us and on the day Jim sorted out my sons stance and got him cueing lovely and straight, and after dinner it was my turn.
"get down and pot a few as you normally would" said Jim, and after doing so i waited for everything to be pulled to bits, to my amazment Jim said"thats excellent i cant fault it, i wouldnt change a thing, pot a few long blues" well i got the odd one and missed most "just increase your back pause a little bit, you do then dont, so i want to see it this time, and as you are missing by the same amount in the same place its your sighting , its nothing to do with your cueing ,you have one of the best cue actions i have seen, i have only said that to maybe 5 people in the past he said, (now i dont know if he was just being kind, but even if he was it was a very nice thing to here) aim to hit bottom cush knuckle, " well, bang straight in the middle of the pocket ,then bang again bang again then an inch out then a proper wobble(only pace kept it out i think) we then went on to learn the fan system and shots i didnt even know existed it really opened my eyes on the game.
well i went to practice today, 5 long blues down either diagonal ,9 out of 10, black off the spot splitting 3 reds with pink and black on table(to practice fan system) and if i split them i got to carry on scoring, cleared them on 4 or 5 occasions and potting pink and black once reds were done breaks of around 40 UNBELIEVABLE all those wasted years of thinking it was my stance and cueing and Jim fixed it for me in basically 2 hours, so dont give up hope, and go and see Jim I can not recomend him Highly enough, im not saying i dont miss now but if i pause and dont keep looking where the white is going before i have potted the object ball( i like to admire my work before i have done it lol)i just dont seem to miss, I WISH I HAD GONE 30 YEARS AGO ,Thanks again Jim.

      welcome to the forum mate,

in one way unlucky, but on the other hand, maybe you needed that "waste" to happen in order to play the kind of carefree snooker you are today!

What's that fan system about now? Interested to hear more about that.

Well done with the break by the way!

Nice story, but can you make it stick I think we've all had those eureka moments, only to crash after a few days.

You are so right Bricktip, but now i have been shown how to self correct i should be ok, there will be horror days, we all have them, but now i know my basics are correct i wont mindmelt myself with unneeded faffing around chopping and changing this and that. I really went to coaching expecting to hear,"your wasting your time fella" so i could come home and just enjoy hitting the balls round the table with my son, so i dont know if i have found out a good thing or a bad thing. Now when i make a mess i can say to myself "what happened there" and know where my mistake was, its a great thing just to know where you have gone wrong as all the frustration leaves you, and that will do for me.

The Fan System is the method Jim uses for helping you to improve your positional play. Nic Barrow calls it something different on his Snooker Gym DVD's. Bit difficult to explain in a post. Would need a diagram but its fairly basic (but very good) stuff. I had two lessons from Jim a couple of years ago and it improved my game greatly. Lesson one concentrated on cueing straight and lesson two covered positional play.

One point in your post has got me worried a little... since you miss the pots on exact same points; its your sighting that is at afult... hmmm.... i would also miss, at times, long pots repeatedly in the same spots and i have noticed that whenever I miss long pots, i normally miss by over-cutting.... anyone has any idea why is this so? Is it sighting or aiming or something else?????????

It could be any number of reasons and you have to eliminate them one-by-one. The only way to do this I think is to video yourself (I'm presuming you don't have a coach available) and first eliminate anything that is causing you not to cue straight. That in itself will be a very tall order.

Then once you have that sorted you can work on the sighting, perhaps with the 'SiteRight' device which is a simple thing really that can be made easily. You could do this first and confirm your sighting is correct but you might still be missing the pots in the same spot because there is something else you do consistently.

Always remember though to work on only one thing at a time, whether that's the SiteRight or any glitches you feel you still have in the backswing and delivery

One day I consistently missed long blues to the left of the pocket by the exact same amount 9 times out of 10. In my case I was getting down very slightly to the left of the line of aim (but parallel) and striking the white very slightly left of center. Everything else about my action was consistent that day, and my aiming was fine, it was the getting down on the line and striking the middle of the white which was the problem.

To be honest Sidd when Jim said sighting i think he meant aiming(im still not sure myself what the difference is between the two they seem so inter linked to me)i think i was lining my shot up at the wrong spot on the blue and it was just his way of getting me to hit the blue in the right place,( i still have to do it down the left to right diagonal im a lefty, left eye dominant).

                              itsnoteasy:

I had better define the two terms 'aiming' and 'sighting' as there seems to be a lot of confusion between them. This came up in the SightRight string earlier.

AIMING is done when standing behind the shot with the head around 3ft above the table and most players will look from OB to the spot on the pocket they want to hit and then determine the spot on the back of the OB towards them that they have to hit to direct the OB along that line.

SIGHTING is done when the player is down in the address position and he is sighting along the cue and CONFIRMING to himself that he is actually on the line of aim he selected when standing up. This is achieved by getting down into the shot correctly so the cue drops onto the correct line of aim and then (usually) during the front pause and perhaps the very first initial pause the player will confirm everything is as he likes.

The SightRight (or SiteRite or SiteRight - not sure which) is concerned with the sighting portion of this and the theory is if the player does not have his cue aligned underneath his eyes correctly he will not get a true visual image and will conclude he is off the aiming line and he will make minor adjustments, usually moving the hips left or right, to adjust things so his eyes now get what he believes is an accurate aiming image. However, this in not correct since he does not get an accurate image of the pot when down on the table (unless it's a very short shot) and consequently adjusts himself off the correct line of aim determined when standing up.
