  • Summers.. Glove.. Powder.. sweat.. Need a way out!

    Hello All you snooker people.

I used to quit snooker for three months in the summers here. However my love for the game has overwhelmed me recently and since this year I am not taking any breaks. So there comes a challenge.

The Summers here are rather hot and temperature can go up to 40-45 Celsius and cause humidity coupled by the fact that my club is in a basement. Now with sweat all around its hard to play with the normal bridge hand. I recently tried a snooker glove but to no use because its feel is rather artificial and the cue sort of glides just too much without any friction and hence I dont feel comfortable. Like with the feel that you get with the hand is great. But if I do play with my hand then the cue wont slide properly due to the summer problem and hence I had to resort to talcum powder they have in the clubs. However, I recently noticed that the powder sort of settles in the grain and it is not good for the cue; so I was wondering for a way out of this problem so that I do not use either the golve or the talcum powder... Can anyone think of anything to help me out here...!!!!

    Regards,
    Sidd

I think the best thing for you would be to keep using the glove they just take time to get use to .

I agree, we recently had a discussion here: http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board...ighlight=glove

      Hope this helps!

You can bring a towel to your club and dry your hands after a couple shots.

You're a far braver soul than myself Sidd. Here in the UK, we're having a bit of a heatwave atm. Nothing like the heat you have to deal with I'm sure, but still hot enough m8! Like pp have already mentioned, don't give up on the glove m8. Have a damp cloth at the ready and buff dry with a lint free cloth inbetween frames? Other than that, I don't know what to suggest other than give snooker a miss during the Summer! Good luck m8..

            Sidd:

I don't know if the club owner would go for this, but I have my table in my basement and we have been having a record hot summer here with high humidity (nothing like yours though) and I went and bought a dehumidifier which is working very well and keeps the humidity down below 50% and it runs automatically and has a drain pipe option that can be hooked up, although I empty mine every 2 days or so.

For a larger area like the club he would probably need a much bigger unit and they are power hungry but he only needs to run it during the summer, plus the room feels cooler with the lower humidity so he might get more summer business as I imagine every snooker player would love to play in the summer if he has a nice cool and dry environment to play in.

If that's not possible, I would try and get used to the glove if you can but NEVER use the talcum powder which, as you said, gets into the ash grain and also gets even stickier after a few frames so you're using it all the time.

In your environment I don't think rubbing down your hands and the cue every couple of shots would be very convenient for you and disturb your rhythm. A lot of people, especially pool players in the US, but now a lot of snooker players too are using the gloves and soon get to love them.

Talcum powder on the table is one of my pet peeves... I've seen tables covered with so much talcum powder it's like someone just had a tofu orgy on them. Unplayable.

But it's true that snooker and humidity just don't mix. So, I guess it's either constant wiping down of your cue and hands, or use the glove.

I sometimes struggle with humidity too... especially when the club owners scrimp on the air-conditioning. With average humidity in the 80s and temperature rising up to 35 degrees celsius, it's impossible to play snooker here without the air-con. Sunny tropics, lovely eh? Lol...

I seen a guy the other day rubbing chalk on his thumb and forefinger as if that was gonna make the cue glide through easier.

Hey, I've seen that too... but I don't think it's the same guy... They're probably related though...

Keep using the glove. The way to get used to it is simple; think not about how different it feels, think about how smooth it feels. Apply a positive acceptance, and you won't be able to play without it. Well, I can't. It took me about 1/2hr to get used to it. Because I loved the smoothness, so the rest was just adjustment for this positive benefit.

Oh, maybe fit an better AC system?

Have to confess i used to give my bridge a quick tap with the chalk duster every now and again, but only when playing with crappy varnished club cues, and usually when drunk!

Yes I think so too: at temperatures above 35 ° C it is not possible to play snooker in a room without air condition.

What you can do, to make it a more natural feel, is cut the two finger tips and thumb tip off the glove, so it just goes on your hand, you only take say 5mm off the tips. Finish the edges with a flame from a lighter, and I mean lightly too, don't set the glove on fire! You will now have more feel with your fingers and thumb, this is the biggest problem with the glove. Unless you've already got a glove with the tips removed that is? In which case, just ignore me! lol
