  • Rounded butt advice...

To cut a long story short, recently changed my cue, it's completely different spec to what i was used to, anyway it's got a rounded butt with no markings, does it matter that i don't have a distinguished way of alway's having my cue facing the shot exactly the same side up every time?

Will this cause uneven tip wear? debating whether i should mark the butt so i'm alway's holding the butt in the same place...

    Hi!

    1. I always hold it the same way, I think all the pro's do. You could look at the grain on the shaft to tell. Eventually your hand might make a mark anyway. Some players do use tape to mark their grip, so that could help you too.

    2. Playing with the cue in the same position every time can actually causes uneven tip wear. Yesterday I was practising screw shots, my tip is now slanted

You could mark it, use tape, look at the grain and remember it, or all sorts of things. But most people do use the cue pointing the same way up

Thanks for the advice, i like the tape idea, regarding the shaft, it's a very clean maple which looks very similiar the whole way round, so marking it would be the best method, which i'll do now actually

        Hi .

I always use a round butt and its just about getting used to it , because if I closed my eyes I could still get it the right way around, and the plus side is if you ever take a chunk out of your tip and lets say want to use top or deep screw , then you just turn the cue around to compansate, this I have done.

I have a maple cue with rounded butt so that I didn't have to bother with the distraction of having to hold the cue in the same position for every shot.

I guess it was just my preference.

Always use rounded butt cues . I spin the cue to line up with the arrows when down on the shot. Every so often i need to re-shape the tip slightly . But no big deal .
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

Thanks again for the replies, just didn't know what was the norm for rounded butt players, i've marked it which i'll try tonight, though if I find it off putting i'll remove it and not worry about it...

Most people hold their cues in the same place because of that chamfer on the end of the butt. If your cue doesn't have one and it's dead straight then it doesn't matter where you hold it. If it isn't dead straight though, hold it up to your eye and turn it until it looks straight and mark it so that you hold it there everytime, and when using the rest.

Also, tho this probably makes very little difference in most cases, wood is not a 100% homogenous/consistent material. So, the cue might be straight, but it might feel/react differently when held in different orientations due to the mechanics of your stroke and the cue composition .. i.e. slightly more flex in one direction vs another, etc.
