Hi, what would you chose if you could only afford one.
    1, A good quality new cue(around the £250-£300 mark)or
2, Spend the same amount on coaching (can get roughly 2 full days at that price with a decent coach)
The only thing i have on the side of the cue ,is that after the outlay i have something that is still worth something to someone else if i decide to sell it on, where as the coaching is only worth something to me, so what do you think, its a toughie for me, but i fancy sticking a decent tip on my cue(instead of the one i bought for 50p off a lad at the club dont even know what it is )and doing the coaching, but id love a decent cue argh its a hard choice.

If you have 300 then you could get a half decent cue on here for 150 say and have a days coaching instead, which is probably long enough amount of time for a good coach to get your game in shape .

Agree. Coaching could improve you no end and doesn't have to cost a fortune. I see myself as a decent coach and I charge £75 for a day of coaching (4 hours). I'm sure you could get a decent cue for about £200 and then get some coaching off a good coach.

Coaching would be my priority, a cue wont improve your game anywhere near as much, assuming you find a decent coach who knows what hes talking about!

When you know what you want in a cue then its time to save up, or order a cue, pay a deposit and then save up while its being made. You have to be sure you know what specifications you want and that comes from experience of trying different cues and playing for a long time. A good cue itself wont make you a better player, but a cue that suits your measurements will.

If your at the beginner stage then any standard cue will do as long as its balanced nicely and smooth, no need to spend a fortune.

Get some elk master tips, find a nice firm one and put that on. Will cost you 50p each if that and are as good as any tip. I wasted loads of money on expensive tips that didn't really help my game whatsoever.

                Matt.

Definitely the coaching, as sometimes even a better cue can make you play worse, but then again, sometimes it can rejuvenate you and make you play better, but you did qualify the question by saying that you might decide to sell it on intimating you may give up the game, so go for the coaching, but coaching is a one-off and transitory, so go for the cue, but the cue might be too long, too short or too heavy so have the coaching, but the coach could be crap so go for the cue. Oh, screw this, just give the game up!!

go for coaching dude. you can buy a good cue anytime once your game is decent enough. Dont think much and go for coaching. get the basics of technique done in two days and some mental aspects of the game and that will remain with you for a lifetime... cue is material you can buy it anytime. you can easily get a nice cue for 100 or something later on... you wont regret this advice trust me.

Get coaching. It's better to know you're doing the basics in technique right than to have a nice cue but still cueing right across the ball often. A good coach will outline what you're doing wrong, rectify them and teach you all kinds of things you otherwise would never know.

Another problem with going for the cue is that I'm assuming you've never gone all out on an expensive cue before and maybe aren't aware of the perfect specification for yourself. Before going all out on the cue I would experiment with cheaper cues at different specs until you find something you are most comfortable with, unless of course you've already found specs that suit you.

Like others have said, coaching will help you for life. You can pick up a half decent cue for £150 if you feel you really need one.

Thanks for replies, and the main thread is go for the coaching and that was more my thinking , NWJ you are right, i have never held , let alone played with or owned a half decent cue let alone a good cue, and as you say if you cant cue straight , i would just be a poor player with an expensive cue, and i dont know what i want in a cue. When i think about it ,it was a daft question lol.

update, was potting a few yesterday and one of the good players in the club was on the table beside me, he left the table and went off, leaving his cue lying on the table, so i had a wee look at his cue, it was a Parris cue, i was dying to pick it up but just couldnt bring myself to do it(thought it was disrespectful ) it looked right nice, understated but classy. I am getting closer to at least holding a decent cue lol

Good that you did not pick it up. You must ask him before you can do that. Never touch things which don't belong to you.

One day you'll have enough money to buy all the beautiful things you want. Would you then like it if other people pick them up?

If you play snooker well, you will soon get the offer to hold and try a good cue. Be patient and enjoy what you've got.
