  • Whippyness of cue

Could someone tell me what effect whippyness and stiffness has on the playing of a cue.

i notice the effect on long shots, a stiff cue will keep more solid where as a whippy cue will give more and make long screw backs more difficult. its all subjective i suppose, a friend of mine prefers whippy cues has he can screw ball all over with them.

So is that to say that with a whippier cue, long.distance shot particularly screwing back require really accurate cueing? But the reaction from a screw shot is higher? Als how do you check for whippiness? Knock the centre of theshaft and see how much the tip moves?

        Whippyness of cue

I'm currently using a whippy cue, and I found that
no problem to play the long pot or screw back with it...But when I use a really stiff cue, I cant get used to it and I dont know why, so I just stick with my little whippy cue, then.

A stiff cue will throw the white off more when using side and also will not impart as much spin on the cueball that a more flexible cue shaft will. Therefore a more flexible shaft will give more control when in the balls as you can use less power and get more spin.

It comes down to a matter of personal taste. with a cue that has a 'medium' shaft flex giving the best of both worlds, control when in the balls and long ball potting accuracy.

However the big issue here is there is no definitive and standard way to measure shaft flex that I've heard of and it's all subjective to the cuemaker. So one person's medium might be called 'too whippy' by another person. I now play with a MW cue which I ordered from Mike with a 'medium flex' shaft and I described to Mike exactly what I wanted and he did manage to hit the shaft flex bang on and I'm quite pleased with the result.

I do find almost all the cues I've tried have been (to me) medium-stiff or stiff and I can't get on with them. I have never noticed any difference with long ball potting between the cues however I have noticed I can't get as much spin with a stiff cue and for a deep screw shot I have to hit the ball harder to get the same effect as my cue. But of course again my cue action is not perfect and that could be me but I have really experimented with this a lot and I still prefer the medium flex.
