  • Advice please regarding sweat and butt(ooh err) of my Andy Travis maple cue.

Hi chaps, some advice on a little annoying problem regarding sweat and cue.
I'm having a problem that whenever I go to a snooker match or practice and the heating on I tend to perspire a lot
leaving usual upper body areas damp for most evening. Easy suggestion would be turn down heating(I'd prefer it off tbh) but that is not always possible.
But the problem I'm having is that my sweat when cueing is getting on to butt of cue effecting the maple veneer and top part of splices(maple parts) leaving a raised grain feel.
My cue is a Andy Travis maple cue with ebony butt, front splice of kingswood with a thick maple veneer.
Not had cue too long but really liking it but for me worrying about dampness and the rough feeling of raised grain.
I've just the other day used some of that finest sand paper(almost feels like paper!) and once or twice max gently rubbed in one motion the problem areas so feels smooth again but worried for next time.
What do I next? Oil it or what I really would like is to have it lacquered from just above slices down to butt as don't mind the feel as use to playing Phoenix, Mastercue Thai cues which have this and I could just wipe off with no problem.
Any cue makers do this? And how much?.....don't think I have the confidence to myself.
Can anyone help please as loving cue but when playing I'm consciously aware of it when cueing now and wiping down butt all the time!
Unusual post I know but any advice welcome(cue makers too) also I expect some silly stuff too.

Have you tried a glove mate?

If you like the feel of gloves it could maybe prevent any alteration to the cues.

I don't mind gloves and a few of my mates play with them and swear by them but i don't personally use one. ( Yet! )

You won't catch me wearing a glove but also that I have no problems that end of the cue, only the butt end(maple veneer, top of and in between splices of shaft) making contact with armpit area/shirt.

Edit: just say that problem area is a 3/4 cue butt cut just and inch above splices although my cue is a 1 piece:wink:

If you´ve sanded the grain down just rub some oil on it and it should be ok.

have the butt french polished or laquered?

Sure Andy Travis would sort this out for you at a reasonable cost.

few coats of polyurethane lacquer. that's what i use, and i wire wool it between coats, works a treat. problem would be getting the right stuff. there is a lot of water based rubbish around and the stuff i use is solvent based that picked up outside uk. think rustins do something similar.

What oil is best to avoid absorbing moisture?? Would be a short term cure as probably go down the lacquering/varnish road.

Might be best option but never known Andy to lacquer cues only oiled??

I agree it's the best option I think but don't fancy doing it myself as like cue and don't want to mess up plus want a real nice pro finish.
Any cue makers reading this and can do please message me a quote for doing as would be appreciated.

The Travis cue i owned had a protective coating on the butt, some sort of friction polish or could have been a french polish definately not just oiled.

I use this, its what rock climbers, golfers and pole dancers etc use to keep their hands dry. Just rub a bit into the V of your bridge, it really does work.

Do you sweat a lot normally? If you do (if you are Living in Britain ) you should go to the docs, I'm sure you can get jabs to stop the sweat glands working , might be worth a try.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

you can actually get a spray from the doctors on prescription. my brother had it and it burned a bit when sprayed but it worked

I think this is what some American cuemakers use on the butt of their cues and it's great stuff. The Thai cuemakers do it well too, they use French polish or piano polish (one and the same?) something like that. The grip this provides helps with feel IMO. In Uncle Vit or Terry could tell you more I think.
