  • New Cue

    Hi,

How long does it take to get used to a new cue?

I ask because our son who had a new cue for Christmas says he isn't used to it yet, hes managed a 86 break with it so far, but has implied he would like to return to his old cue, how much longer should he persevere?

    Thanks

Graeme Dott never keeps two cues because if you play poorly you are liable to blame the cue and go back to the old one.

I bet half the members on here have more than 2 cues, myself included. However I don't chop and change unless I'm going through a proper slump and then I'll sometimes change cues to get my motivation and concentration back.

I don't think there is a set time to get used to a new cue. You either adapt to it fairly quickly or you will probably never adapt to it, especially if you are comparing it to another cue you are familiar with. I think if he has it in his head he doesn't feel its right then he's best off going back to the old cue. If it ain't broken don't fix it!

        For me it depends.
What was the quality of the old cue? what was the reason for change?

If the answer is the old cue is quality and nothing wrong with it then I can't see why he changed in the first place.
If the old cue was old, pretty naff and a bit warped then I would see a new cue as beneficial.

I had an old rileys cue I used since I was 14 and stuck with it until I was 32. I changed because it was warped, slightly brittle, had no extensions for it. My new one ( A TW cue ) played completely different and I stuggled for a bit but perseverance can have its benefits. Even now I still have times where I think I may benefit from going back but I never do. The throw on my new cue is different so on long shots it took some adjusting.

I feel now I am a better player for it and am consistantly getting better breaks. I love my TW cue

Maybe the new cue he has just isnt the right one.

          Thanks for your reply's.

His old cue was a JP exclusive, however, he mentioned that his dream was to have a one piece and for that to be a JP Ultimate. As you know there's a two year waiting list for these. Too long to wait in my opinion-

He then decided that he liked the idea of a Mike Wooldridge one piece,to be made to the exact specs of his old cue. From order to delivery in under three months. This cue is absolutely beautiful, cant find enough superlatives to compliment it, stunning workmanship.

Initially he was over the moon with it, mentioned he had more control of the white, however he asked me to change the blackspin tip back to a MW supertip as the blackspin was too hard for him.

Then yesterday he said he would like to go back and give his old cue a try, I asked him why and he said that somethings not clicking with his new clue, a bit vague I know.

A few pros have had a knock with the MW and both said it is a very nice cue, one thought it better than his Ultimate for the brief time he used it.

Anyway, ill ask our son to dig deep and try and find the true potential of his new cue and see how it goes.

This isn't going on Ebay! well I hope its not.

Thanks again all for your help.
