A friend of mine asked me about his late dad's cue and if it was worth tidying up and maybe he can start using it. His dad was multiple Billiard champion at our club and was a mean snooker player as well. The cue was supposedly bought in the 50s and over the years his dad fiddled with it (and many other cues as well) and many years ago added weight to it, literally by adding lead sheets to the butt and covering by black plastic tape.
I said it probably wont cost that much to refurb, if it was possible, and remember as it is now it is not doing anything and worth diddly.
So I took it home and removed the layers of tape and got down to the lead sheets. The lead came off relatively easy but the cue was still covered in glue. This took ages to carefully remove and I got it down to where the front splice and veneer could be seen, which was a pleasant surprise.
The cue is marked at 17oz (Peradon?) and was 20.5oz with the lead/tape; now stripped 15.5oz.
At this point I took the pictures to send to Andy Travis. I asked Andy about a refurb, new ferrule and tip, add some weight to bring up to modern standard range, a butt joint and a mini-butt.
As you can see my friend's dad also had scratched his initials into the flat, Andy said how about a badge to replace this. My friend was happy with this idea.
So after only a short wait the cue is back.
Ferrule/tip now 9.5mm (was over 10.5mm) and the weight is 17.5oz and shaft and butt are very nice. The badge looks great on the butt and the mini
