  • Restoring silky smooth finish??

Hey guys. I am hoping a cue doctor might be able to help me. I have a lovely cue which was made for me about a year ago. Its a Stamford and it has a really nice smooth finish which I think is linseed oil based - but pretty sure there is something else they use - and wouldn't tell me when I picked up the cue so I think it is a trade secret!

I replaced the tip last week, and although I thought I was being careful I got a bit of glue on the shaft. I just gave it a light rub with some really fine wire wool, and seem to have made the tip-end of the shaft a little rougher in feel, compared with the rest of the cue. It doesn't slide through the bridge quite the same now! (it's really not that bad, and I am probably being a little over-fussy!). But I wondered if there was a simple-ish way to get it back to being really silky-smooth again?

I've applied some linseed oil, and buffed with a micro-fibre, but this hasn't really done the trick.

    Any advice would be much-appreciated!

    Thanks

i'm guessing its an ash shaft?
When using wire wool on ash i have found that it can pull some of the grain filler out leaving it a little rougher in feel. I find always best to use ultra fine wet and dry 1000-2000grit maybe worth a try see if it helps. If its not silky smooth before oiling then oil alone wont help. Worst case scenario is re-filling the grain which isn't a big job if you know what your doing.

Thanks very much! I guess I panicked a bit cos I've cared for my cue for a year like you'd care for a baby! And until now it's been perfect. I can't bear to see people at my local club sanding their cues when they play. It's not right if you ask me!! So when I affected the finish by mistake with some wire wool, the last thing I wanted to do was make it worse with some sandpaper! But I've taken your advice and tried a light run with some VERY fine paper, and I'm pleased to say my baby is back to its silky best! Thank god for that!!!
