  • Can I make my case waterproof?

    Bit of an odd one.
I bought a new case while over at craftsman today, one of these: (the lighter colour one)
    http://www.craftsmancues.com/acatalo...17.html#SID=42

Quality wise for the money, I think they're fantastic and it looks great - but when I got home I noticed I'd marked the outside with chalk so wet a cloth and tried to wipe it off, at which point the water soaked right in and the panel changed colour. I'm guessing this case is not remotely waterproof, or at least that panel wasn't - haven't tried the others.
Given we live in the UK that makes it about as useful as a chocolate teapot - is there any way to waterproof it? If so what's the best stuff for the job?

    Cheers.

I haven't used it but I'd probably used something like a suede/nubuck shoe protector

You could try painting it with thick roofers bitumen paint.

Make up a heavy weight plastic sleeve or a sleeve out of waterproof material to put the case in. The only way to keep from getting water damage. My opinion only.

Just get some sport wax, used to waterproof boots, from any outdoor shop.

kiwi wax or try resolene leather sealer, but resolene will most likely darken the leather a bit.

Depends on the finish you want at the end of the day.

I have done this with my 1 piece case due to traveling by public transport.
I get funny comments sometimes but when out an about and get caught in the rain it protects case & cue from water damage so all's good.

                  +1

Me too, don't care what it looks like, it's the easiest option and gives most protection for a leather case. I also use it when transporting in the car since it prevents the leather getting scuffed.

                    TooDark & ghost121,

Good to see I'm not alone regarding this thought. Who cares what it looks like. It's what the case looks like when you take it out of the sleeve(dry as a bone even in a heavy downpour).

                    Cheers mates

That's a shame, but seriously, why would you expect a snooker case to have been waterproofed in the first place. Really ???? It's a protective cover for an indoor sport piece of equipment. Yes It could get wet in the rain walkign to your club, but you didn't expect it to have been waterproofed did you ? Even outdoor shoes aren't waterproofed when you buy them

Yes. I *seriously* would - perhaps waterproof was the wrong word, but water resistant yes. Every case I've ever owned you could just wipe down and it's dry, but this one was obviously designed differently.
Like a said, I wasn't criticising craftsman, it was an oversight on my behalf. But anyway, thanks for that helpful, constructive reply... I feel truly educated that snooker is played indoors, and that a cue case is meant to protect a cue, these are things I *seriously* had never considered, so thanks for pointing those out.

P.S I'll pass on my own advice now - You need to perhaps invest in a better pair of shoes, mine will certainly withstand a walk to the club in drizzle without becoming soaked.

And how would you know anything about the quality of my shoes? At no point did I say my own shoes could not withstand a walk to the club in the drizzle without getting soaked. An earlier post, not mine, also suggested there was waterproofing products for outdoor boots. If you meant water resistant then say that and we can advise on leather coatings that would provide water resistance. I would agree with you that a cue case should be water resistant, but not waterproof. Don't have a go because I responded to you using the wrong word - how was I to know you were using the wrong word. I took your post at face value exactly as you typed it.

Why have ago at me when you didn't have the go at the guy who suggested use use roofing bitumen?

What point is there trying to waterproof the outside of a case when water will always get in at the opening joint?

                              Guys,

The reason for a case is to protect the cue from physical damage, not to be waterproof or water resistant.

If you want to keep water off of the case or out of the case, put the case in something that IS waterproof.

                              Just my 2 cents again.
