  • The quality of JP cues????

    Hi everyone,

Yes I have totally got the SF buzz and want to keep posting, It is great to be able to get all this info in one place.

I have read that JP cues are not as good as they used to be, can anyone say if this is true or not? It still seems that most pro players use his cues. When searching for cue makers a few names come up but there doesnt seem to be many pro's using other cue makers cues, I am sure there are some pro's using them but the majority seem use JP cues. Would this be the case if they were not a good.
I have also seen that some people are saying that the Ultimate is not so Ultimate any more, for such an expensive cue I would want it to make 147's while I sit and have a cup of tea.

    Hi Kate,

JPUs are as variable as the next custom. The problem is that people really do expect miracles of it and they buy a TW, MW, JO, CJ and every other cue as well. These people are fools. They'd be better off spending just £20 on a lesson with a coach. There are folk who really do believe that the 'one' cue is out there, like the one ring! LOL

A JP cue is gonna be as good if not better than any other make on average. But each custom comes out different to another one that is identical, because of the individual characteristics of each shaft. JP gives you a receipt, a chance to put a deposit down and not pay full up front for something you've never seen and he lets you try the cue on collection and he will try and put right anything your not happy about. His business is respectable and above board. He makes cues with planes in the UK, from scratch, no dodgy Thai cues coming over and being oil up before being flogged on as British from him. He's kosha.

The three greatest players of all time have used two Parris cues and a Powerglide. Go figure.

I had older Parris cues that played great but I have old ones that where rubbish too -

Like everything to do with snooker - finding a cue - playing - watching a great game - you can say.

      It's hit and miss

Sorry Leo but not sure what your comment means.

Well not exactly fair to say Parris are the best just because a certain player uses them I think - he gives them out free to the top 64 and its only mugs like us who have to pay top dollar.

I think with cues its all preference - I think they can be good and it is quite convenient for any player using one if they live down South they can pop into the shop get bits and bobs done for them - I heard Ronnie has actually said the best cue he ever had was in fact a Burwatt champion he used as a kid.

Certain players have had success with lots of other cues -

John Higgins used a North west and a good few others
Mark Williams a barracuda Gold medal
Steve Davis thought he used a ye old ash
            Alex Higgins a burwat champion
Selby and Ding use a Stamford
and our current world champion - Gary>? cue doctor>? - don't know who made his?

I guess its not down to the name on the cue as long as you play well with it.

I'm also guessing he means Steve Davis, but like Byrom I thought he had a ye old ash which was then work on by John. Stuarts cue is by Gary Taylor "Cue Doctor Southend"

Ronnie has also had cues made by other cuemakers, Mac Chambers and Robert Osborne for example.

Quality wise, it depends on what you mean, personally attention to detail wise I don't think JP is the best but he is good at what he does. He is bar far the most famous cuemaker and his marketing has done wonders for his business. Players will likely go to who they have heard of.

On a commercial marketing basis no other cuemaker comes near or will never be as popular as the Parris brand and TBH you've got to give the bear credit for what he's achieved whether we like his cues or not.

I would imagine riley, bce, and a few others are far more popular

Well I've never seen a bird that interested in JP cues or snooker in fact. I think he's trying to throw us off the scent.

I find it hard to believe you have never heard of Reanne Evans

Also, everyone involved in snooker has an interest in JP cues, they are regarded as the best. But it's people's preference I guess.

I just came on to this forum today and I'm sure I, like many have the bug for it, it's a great forum. Unfortunately there are those that comment rudely and very negatively.
