I just started playing billiards about 3 months ago after playing 8 ball pool during my teens and twenties and then mostly snooker in recent years after having taken a break from cue sports for a while when I started at university, I have really taken to it though and am improving all the time and made my highest ever break of 94 at the weekend.
I currently play both biliards and snooker with my phoenix master cue which i really like but it has a 9.7mm tip but recently I have been thinking about maybe trying a cue with a smaller tip mainly because real power shots and long pots aren't required very often in biliards plus when I played 8 ball pool I played with a cue with a 8mm tip for a while and I found it to be excellent for close range potting and positional play and for very delicate touch shots, so I just think that a smaller tip may be slightly better at billiards especially for top of the table play and close cannons etc.
So what tip size do most top billiards players use then, I have read that most of the top snooker players use a tip size between 9.5 and 10mm, I can understand this as my current 9.7mm tip seems to provide a very good balance for all the different types of shots required in snooker.
