Table Iron Temp Setting

I need some help. Does anyone have any idea what the perfect temp setting should be for a table iron? I have a feeling my thermostat is not working right so I am going to pick up a digital temp probe but need to know what temp I am looking for.

Not sure but I would try different temps on any off cuts you may have floating about and use the paper trick

if it is a Dowsing iron, I think Thurston/Peradon sell components if you think the thermostat has stopped working.
I have asked before what is the correct setting on these irons and not had any definitive answer. when at the Welsh I thought of asking one of the table cleaners what setting they use but never had the chance

Thanks Dean, hard to tell what kind of iron it is as there is no name on it anywhere. I see John Parrot sells all the parts. I think I will order up a new neon light and thermostat and see what happens.

Hi Leo yea that's what I have been doing. It's tough up here as we are on 110 so it's very hard to know when it's ready. This all come about when I was at the Canadians this summer and seen them ironing the tables and I could see a nice line where the iron had been and TD's does the same thing. I have had mine for two years and I have always had it set as highest it would go and it did a half ass job. So I decided to pull it a part and screw with the thermostat and now I have a real mess. Burnt the wires off the light screwed up the thermostat and I think that's about it.

Already told Les this, but for others it will be the same heat setting as on a normal iron set to 'wool'. Now I don't know what tempt that is but if someone has a digital iron perhaps they can set it to wool and let us all know.

OK, just googled 'ironing wool temperature' and I got 300F (I think 148C). That was for clothes where you don't want a shine but for tables you do want a bit of a shine so I would imagine around 350F or 165C or something like that.

Now the trick is to either measure the temperature or get a thermostat which will go to those temperatures.

Terry always talks sense and I agree with him here again. I would just say make sure the table has had a good brushing before hand. Using an iron can sometimes 'cook' the dust on a table and leave visible marks

if it has no name on it, it could be a Chinese "version"
pop a photo of the iron so we can have a look
If it is not a Dowsing then the parts ordered may not fit or be compatible (i.e. over heat and burn out?)

Les is very OCD with his table so,I'm sure he would give it a good brush beforehand.

the Dowsing DB2 has a dial with numbers 1 to 9 (?), others (Chinese copies) have temperature scale on the dial.
I have asked before which number 1-9 is best for the cloth, this has not been answered

IIRC Geoff Large has said in the past that some of the Chinese copies have caught fire !

Hi everyone, yea as for my process my table is brushed & blocked even If I spend ten minutes running blacks off the spot. I also take a damp cloth and do the rails as I hate any finger prints in the nice Mahogany... once a month I lay down on the floor and shuffle around the table cleaning all the wood work and the turned legs. I guess that answers that question. No fear of me ironing in the dust. From what research I have found 300F seems to be the temp setting for wool. My dial goes to 180C. I think what I need is a U.S. Thermostat. Since I have screwed with the thermostat I have no idea where I am at. One thing I know is it is getting way to hot. Now as for what model I have maybe you guys can tell by the photos.

I always use my dowsing iron on number 8 on my number 10 match cloth...perfect.

Yeah would have thought so.....remember ....wool is v hard to burn...however cloths with an amount of other products such as nylon etc( see some hainsworth cloths) will scorch easiest.

I have bypassed my thermostat as it is not working correctly. I have hooked up a remote heat probe which I now have a wireless thermostat on my wall in my snooker room. I heated it up tonight to 160C and tried it and there is just a faint line where I can see where I just ironed. Before with stat set at 180 it would shut off but it could not have even been close as I could never see where I had just made a pass. I emailed Strachan tonight to see what they recommend for the ultimate setting. I know one thing with the iron set at 160 and my table heaters on it is playing fast.
