  • Miss rule app

    Hi All,

I play in the Dutch snooker leagues where the top 2 divisions play the "miss" rule. However we do this without a referee and it is never really sure if the balls have been replaced to original positions.

Then I thought there must be an app for that. But there isn't.

It would be really easy-If a snooker is laid the smartphone takes a table shot. Then if a miss is called the smartphone table shot is superimposed on the real-time table shot to replace the balls fairly.

Any budding developers out there? I'd buy the app along with the rest of the amateur snooker world!

I've never known the miss rule to apply in the amateur game or at least without a qualified referee to implement it from a neutral perspective.

It's implemented in our league , and in my opinion it's ruining it .Far to many interpretations.

It's been applied in our league, in all matches, virtually all of which don't have a qualified referee. There have never really been any problems.

I don't see ANY problem in playing the miss rule when you can see any part of a ball on, but yes, it is subjective when it comes to failed escapes from snookers. Although the league is handicapped, most players seem to judge it on whether they could have made a better attempt themselves, although, in all honesty, most times a miss isn't called. If it's a really pitiful attempt then a miss is called, and quite often it's the offender who calls a miss on himself.

What's the usual etiquette down the club when you're playing, are folk fairly lenient as long as a proper attempt is made?

as the rules states and many forget this bit:
"(a) The striker shall, to the best of his ability, endeavour to hit the ball on or a ball that could be on after a Red has been potted. If the referee considers the Rule infringed, he shall call FOUL AND A MISS unless:..."
so the attempt must be adjudged to the player's ability before a Foul and a Miss is called

Miss rule is a joke anyway, when it was first brought in it was referees discretion, now they call a miss if you slide past by a ball hair. (no pun intended)

Its relative to player ability. Dean is right on that.

But with relation to the original question, if its from a snookered position you could adopt the toothed ball marker and charcoal pencil solution. Might work for some situations if you really intend to enforce f&m

Fair enough! Was something I wasn't sure about. I'm a beginner really, always played pool over the years but never played snooker regularly until recently.

Cheers for the actual explanation of the rule, didn't know that

                        Miss rule app

I notice that the miss rule seems to be under more and more scrutiny lately but World Snooker is not beyond change so I suppose if it was causing that much of a problem they would adjust it. Until then I see no choice but to play along so to speak

The rule is basically unchanged in meaning from how it was introduced in September 1995, so the professionals obviously aren't having that much of a problem with it!

                            Hello, sir.

Like your idea, but wouldn't the smartphone need to be securely fixed in place before the match began, presumably somewhere with a high vantage point?
