  • Advice on a cue

    Hello.
I used to play a couple times a week a few years back and I'm looking to get back into snooker and I'm after a new cue. I'm looking at a couple of cues at the minute but I'm not 100% on what's right for me. I prefer quite a heavy cue. I would appreciate any advise so could anyone advise me on what weight, length, size of the tip and what type of tip too look at?

    Thanks

    Hi Jimmy
If you are unsure of what specific specs you would like then the general advice is to go for middle ground.
9.5mm tip is just right for snooker, don't really need to go any smaller then that at this stage, although many people do, just remember the smaller the tip, the more unwanted side you are likely to get which will make potting balls more difficult.
Length depends on a number of factors, how straight your bridge arm is etc, doesn't really have all that to do with your height, Jimmy White isn't the tallest player in the world but uses a 59 inch cue, whereas Mark Williams is pretty tall but only uses a 57 inch cue. 57 inch is a good place to start.

Weight if you like a heavier cue then anything over 19 ounce is considered heavy
Type of tip I would stick with a pressed tip for now such as an elk master, they are pretty cheap but are inconsistent so I would suggest buying at least a handful to get you started.

As with everything in this game it's all personal preference, those specs (apart from the weight) are all pretty standard and a lot of players will stick to those specs forever, some are always tinkering and trying something new. Good luck in your game and finding what suits you.

Go to a local club or cue store n test out a few cues. If u feel comfortable, that's the cue for u. After that only u start to measure things around. Try doesn't mean poking few balls. Try means whip around with it on the table. Different cue has different balance point. Some cues are made light but feel heavy because of the balance point. Go have some whacks! Cheers

+1 to what Mike said. Try and get down your local club and try some cues, most places will have a selection even try some rack cues, least that way you can narrow down to what you prefer and feel comfortable with, Tip size, weight, length etc......

What area of the country are you in?
