  • Issues with Phoenix black tips....

Is anyone else having problems with the quality of the Phoenix black at the moment? The last 3 I have put on have all had to come off within a week or two and I only play a couple times a week!

Now I'm not for one second knocking Phoenix tips, I have used them religiously for a while now and I have always been infatuated with them from the very first shot. Excellent tip, it just seems very unusual to get 3 dodgy ones on the trot.

Could very well be my installation that is to blame but as I said, never had these issues before, the last 3 have all splita couple of layers above the ferrule, the one I have on is splitting now I'm just hoping it stays on until Friday

Tempted to try the Elk pro or a Kamui

Apparently its best to get them in 11mm and trim them down

Why would that be? Generic advice on single layer tips is use bigger sizes and trim, but that is because the thicker, and therefore best quality, leather is in the middle, apparently.

Can't see the same principle applying with a layered tip.

Its to do with how they're made, I cant remember exactly what but I remember Adr147 saying it had something to do with the tooling not being as good for the smaller diameter tips.

I've had layers come off on shots and while chalking but I've had a great run with these for 2 plus years using 10mm medium I think maybe a batch? Maybe they were made on a Friday arvo just before knock off 🍻

I have just put a fourth one on and it's playing much better than the previous 3, I ordered an elk pro and an Adr147 medium, I can't decide which to try first, the Phoenix will be coming off tomorrow. Been playing with them for about a year with no issues, 3 poor ones on the bounce I just got fed up with them.
