  • Best tip?

    Hi folks

A good number of years ago I purchased a new snooker cue, at the time of ordering I was told that a worthwhile upgrade would be to have an Elk tip fitted to the new cue, this was done and I was very pleased with both the cue and the way it performed.

Over the years I have continued with the Elk brand but now find that they are now very inconsistent, result being that I tend to go through a few tips before finding one that I am reasonably happy with.

I have read recently that they are nowhere near as good as the old Elk and would be inclined to agree.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a brand that they know to be good and most importantly consistently good, I like a lot of feel to a tip, preferably leaning to soft rather than hard.

I can manage breaks round about the 60-80 on a fairly regular basis and mostly lose it through bad cue ball control.

My thoughts rightly or wrongly are maybe a better tip will get me to the magic ton!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Cheers

many threads on this, the most recent of note being this one:
    http://www.thesnookerforum.co.uk/boa...highlight=tips

Many agree about the elks. some press them, some dunk them in milk and then press them, others pick out the firm ones from a box.

Loads of tip choices now. have a search and read, try some

Try GRAND CUE TIPS you can purchase them on e bay start with the medium as the hard are well very hard !!! after using Elks for some time I thought whats going on you buy a whole box and only a few are up to standard then there is the mucking about of pressing dunking e.c.t. Why ? buy a tip put it on shape and burnish and away you go thats my thinking, I have used about 10 Grand tips over the past and not had a bad one, sometimes wonder why the Elks are so popular with pro players DO THEY GET THEM FOR FREE !!!!

Well I thought given my dissatisfaction with the inconsistency of the Elk's I've had recently I'll phone the retailer that I bought my cue from and see if he knew of a good consistent tip that he was willing to recommend.

Here's what he had to say regarding the Elk's 'When they fall on the floor we don't bother picking them up we let the hoover get them'

He then went on to recommended the 'KAMUI' @ £9.95 per tip plus the postage. Wonder why? Are they that good?

As an OAP I never thought I'd see the day that I was contemplating paying over a tenner for a cue tip!!

Thanks so far for your help/advice.

I bought a box of 50 chinese tips at £2 a box to put on the cues I make and guess what, they're very good and very consistant.

Been an Elk man all my playing life but Buffalo Diamond and Grand medium run a good Elk very close.

Theyll be the TS Long Ba tips on ebay, I thought they would be awfull but for under a fiver I thought I'd try them, they're actually very good, a genuine alternative to Elk and Blue Diamond. Fairly firm but grip well and hold chalk.

ADR147(on hete) has lots of boxes of Grand tips. I bought a box of soft off him (does a good price for TSF member) and had some nice breaks last night playing with one. Won't be going back to a duff box of elks ever again!!
