  • Advice for a snooker novice

    Hi everyone!

Greetings from Russia. Unfortunately, very few people play snooker here so I really rely on your help. I am a big fan of the game so decided to learn to play it after playing pool for many years. I quickly realized that to progress I need a better cue that what the clubs offer. And even if I am not a good snooker player yet (but I am a good pool player), I want to buy a cue that would be good and allow me to progress. I really don't want to buy smth average.

My coach and some of my UK friends advised me to buy from Thai producers Mastercue or Maximus. But when both companies asked me what parameters I want from a cue, I became a bit lost. Can you give me advice on what I should be looking for? The problem is - I have no information of what the parameters of the cue in the club are. I don't know whether I played with a heavy or lightweight cue. I think I need a longer cue as am I 1m90cm of height but I also do not know how long is should be. So what would you recommend me to do? What would be the characteristics that I need to ask for?

My budget is $500 if it matters.

You can get a cracking cue for that money but at the same time, it depends what you are after. When you pay that kind of money, you start paying for other things like craftsmanship and how the cue looks rather than how it plays. Not saying that means a cue in that range wont be made in terms of playability, but if you are simply after a cue which you can progress with, you can pay a lot less for a fantastic cue.

You're quite tall. Maybe start with a 58" cue in length. and everything else just go standard. so maybe 18-19oz in weight and 9.5-10mm tip size.

thai cue makers are good! maximus is very popular now!

Many thanks for your comment! $500 was really a max and includes shipping etc. I do not want to pay for how it looks - I just want to get the best playing characteristics.

Maximus told me their ultimate series starts from $250. Would that be a good option?

I would say so yes. I'm sure if you explain to them and ask them to recommend specs i don't see why they can't help you

It is about 147-148 cm if I remember correctly.

In terms of tactics of the game I take advice from a guy who is a snooker referee, originally from Latvia. He never played on a professional tour as far as I know so you would unlikely know him.
And I have recently started taking lessons from Mikhail Kiladze - he is a very good pool player but also plays snooker. He gives me advice on the technical aspects, etc.

okay well you might want to go for something just over 58" like as you say 149. i am 6'4 and my current cue is 148cm, though my last cue was 145/57".
here are a few videos of me using both cues. the first was a club cue conversion and the 148 is a cue i made, the ash shaft is actually from russia, your neck of the woods.
as you can see im closer to the white and my bridge arm is slightly bent, more compact. and the 148 my technique seems a little more open.

              145
