      How come the joint is on the shaft and not in the ebony butt section?

        Some are and some are not. Mark Williams has one with that style joint. Steve Davis had one with the joint through the top of the splicing.

            Yep as said as cues can joint 3/4, through splices, just above splices and centre jointed.

                My MW rocket cue is split just under the tips of the splice's.

                This was made like this and this was made long before Steve Davis had his cue made this way.
