1 piece vs 3/4 joint

What do you prefer/use and why?

Looking for pro's and con's of both.

People claim a 1 piece has a better "feel", which is something I've never noticed. Besides that a 3/4 is far more convenient to cart around than a 1 piece. That's really about it.

I've been trying out new cues and have used 3/4 and 1 piece and maybe it's me but I really can't notice anything different in feel or feedback between the two.

I reckon the only pro vs con is the convenience like you say narl, that's probably it. ive always played with a 1 piece but the cases aren't the easiest to get into a car

I've been carrying a 1 piece double case around with a couple of cues in it and you are right, a 3/4 cue case is so much easier and comfortable to handle. I'll certainly end up with a 3/4 case and cue.

You can always have a wider 3/4 case so you can get all the extensions in it and still fit in the car easily!

I suppose one downside of a 3/4 cue is that the joint may develop a fault at some stage. Clearly not going to happen with a 1 piece! Hopefully if you buy a cue you get many years of trouble free playing but faults do occurr with cues from time to time as you'll see from various posts on TSF. Loose ferrules, rattles from the butt, loose joints etc etc.

I'd bet that if you covered where a joint is supposed to be in masking tape on a number of cues, nobody could accurately identify which are 1 piece and which are 3/4. The best hitting cues I've touched have mostly been 3/4. I'd hazard that making the 3/4 is much easier for the skilled makers that better results are achieved more consistently.

It's personal choice and the psychological placebo will make some people play better.

Yeah I like the idea of a masking tape test, that would finish any debate!

Well seeing as most 3/4 joints are at approx 16" then with 6" of ebony splices on the shaft gives a total of roughly 22" of ebony. Majority of one piece cues will have around 18" of ebony, so it's very easy to tell

Spiral wrap of masking tape to cover the entire area. I reckon there's a few players in the world who can really feel the difference. Probably more cue makers could tell if they test hit their own cues day to day.

Probably this for me, along with how can a cue be improved by adding a few lumps of metal?

No real difference in feel in my opinion. I switched to a one piece mainly because I had issues with the joints in my last 2 3/4 cues.

Yeh i agree that most of it will be in your head, like people have said, near impossible to feel an actual difference

I would guess the difference is so smalll, akin to the differences you feel between different cues anyway. I reckon a cuemaker would be able to compare but that's about it
