59 Ok Or A No Go? I Normal Play With 57 Will 59 Be Very Oversize?

  • #2
there is a school of thought that there is a correlation between your personal height and the length of a cue. The unspoken rule is that the cue should be equal of length equal to your shoulder height when cue is standing from the floor up. I speak under correction here. However I don't believe in this. Use what's comfortable for yourself. Personally I use a 59 inch cue and I am 5 feet 10 inches tall. Anything shorter and I suffer with my game. I have been repeatedly told that I have too long a cue but again this is what works for me and I don't see the need to change.

If you go to a 59" from 57" that is a MASSIVE jump. In my experience even a 1/2" difference feels too much.

When I changed from 57 to 62 it took me ten minutes to get used to it. Two inches is just the width of two fingers and you can go from having an address with cue arm very close to forward of the vertical to one just behind the vertical like Barry Hawkins and many other top players without hundreds of hours of mucking about with your set up.

It goes a long way to not dropping the shoulder into the shot before the strike, gives you a bit more cue to sight along and allows a straighter bridge arm thus a more stable stance, so what's not to like ?

        Go for it mate.

I think it depends on where you hold the cue on the butt and how many inches you like through the bridge hand. Length of your arms is probably more important than how tall you are. Just my opinion.

Yep, although there is a lazy correlation: a human's wingspan ie the distance from finger tips to finger with arms out wide is your height. Check out the square in the da Vinci drawing: https://www.britannica.com/biography...s-and-drawings

As I said this is lazy\generalised as it can be more or less than the height: check out Boxers' "Tales of the Tape" type stuff, as they should have a longer wing span.

On a more pedantic point: the distance from Bridge fingers to the other elbow is probably the best measurement?

There is a thing missing in this generalisation - technique... Some players hold at the back of the cue others slightly up, some prefer a longer bridge some are more compact - some have a different stance and body shape on the shot and well of course you can be a small guy with longer arms than a big guy with shorter arms.

So what can you do? Well you can change technique to suit the cue or get a cue that suits your technique... trial and error

Yep, I was just commenting on the "height as a guide" thing.

As with a lot of "Which Cue" stuff: play with it\them and decides which feels best: and preferably without knowing the length, weight etc.

I would say, go to a shop with loads of cues, try them all, (do not look at brand or price(to much), and buy the one you like best

I would say that most players build their technique around their cue. If you start young with a standard length cue and grow to above six feet and keep the same cue then your technique will have to adapt.
Look at the video of a young Ronnie age 14 and see how long his bridge is compared to now. He says he was a proper player then and potted balls for fun, but as he grew taller his cue was getting shorter and gradually his set up changed, had coaching I believe.
Didn't stop him being a great player but what if he'd moved up to a cue about three inches longer to keep his set up the same.

                      Length

I've got a long one. And I have big hands. Much bigger than Donny Trump's.
