  • Cue Grip

I have noticed a few professionals don't use much pressure on their thumb and first finger and support it mainly with the last three fingers ...I think Alex Higgins played this way back in the day and so does Ronnie Osullivan ..coaches don't seem to consider this grip
    Any thoughts ?

I have never taken a vid of my grip. All I know is is that its a relaxed grip. I am not clutching the cue and my thumb does not touch at all. I also do not like to use the term "lose" because a grip can be too lose as well as too tight. On my final back swing, yes, I do totally relax up my grip and carry that through towards and through the CB.

Thumb doesn't touch at all ...can't see how that could work really
I noticed some players grip cue with the second finger and thumb and the remaining fingers support ..first finger doing next to nothing ....

        Tof question my friend !!

It's personal. Realy hard to teach some one how to hold the cue, which finger he should use in order to get a consistent grip, imo.
What's most important is, that you allow the cue to do it's job. Your grip during the backswing and delivery should'nt hamper the cue and his natural movment.

Some believe a loose grip is important. I do believe a FIRM grip is important. fingers remain in touch with the cue during the backswing and delivery,

each has his own way .
E.g. I use thump and use my index finger to close the grip .

My brother use thumb and first finger and colse it with the last three fingers ( same way as Ronni / S lee does ) .
This method can be very useful for players with a long backswing , imo.
My brother has a Bswing around 15 inches.
I'm gonna look whether i can find any vid from him ( he is the Video guy in the family. ) .

What ever you do, find a way to have a consistent grip.
Your grip is the key to your cue action and your game, imo. Realy important.

In the meantime, I found a video from Jason (J6), which i think is very useful.
Watch how he open and close his fingers / start slow with delivery and build up speed .

Good reply ...I play pretty much the same grip has you ...when I was a young player I did most of this stuff without thinking ....I have had 25yrs out of the game and I have been studying the cue action and all aspects of the game of late

hi dave, ifind many over complicate the so called grip. i say so called cus the shot and cue dosent require gripping..
you could simply cue from the elbow, making sure the elbow is fixed and pushing the cue through on a straight line,. so focusing on the elbow keeps the hand holding the cue up feeling weighted and natural, no gripping.

            heres a few pointers:

            adding pressure for more pace:

on this vid notice how mr lee shakes the fellas hands, all very loose, delicate and barely holding:

nice one, didnt know if somone else was using a grip that i use.
i pull the cue back like most people but i close only the last 3 fingers and let the thumb and forefinger relax. i wondering if you could explain abit more of ur bros grip please or perhaps did u find his video?
my grip is too loose, and i like your post , you used the word firm for grip and thats wat i am after. i open my last 3 fingers but then i lose control over the cue. and if i dont open too much it feels abit tight. i would really really appreciate if you could share something since your bro seem to be the only one who uses a grip like me .

althought the closing part is fine for me, but when i pull the cue back i dont have much control etc.
              tnx

                nice vid of shaun
at the very start of the clip, i can see his grip clearly. thats what i am trying to achieve but i cannot. in the backswing my last 3 fingers open too much that they are all straight, and i dont see any pros fingers that loose. thats y i dont have cue control. i can see that all pros middle finger is more bent even on long backswing.

not sure how to achieve a firm and consistent grip. been trying so hard but i dont get a nice and comfortable grip which gives me cue control. seen coach many times and he says my technique is perfect. and he asked me to find a proper grip for myself which i really cannot

                any suggestions?
