  • Question cuemakers

    Hi

I have a 3/4 cue thats a bit long and heavy for me, was wondering if it was possible to reduce the length of a cue by shortening the cue butt at the end which meets the shaft by 1/4 of an inch, thereby reducing some of the length but possibly the weight by about 0.5oz.

    Thanks for the help.

1/4 of an inch is the thicknes of a new tip and losing that won't make a blind bit of difference.

If your cue is too long AND too heavy why not just get a shorter, lighter cue?

I bought it online at a bargain price. Not my normal specs but was hoping to get it altered to something more fitting

Should be a fairly easy job for a professional to do I would imagine. One half of the joint would need to be removed, the shaft or butt end shortened,& the joint fixed back. That part of the cue would then need to be "thinned down" very slightly.I have had joint work done by Tony Wilshaw in Stoke who is excellent. He doesn't generally like to work with anything but his own joints though so would probably want to replace the entire joint.Last time he did a similar job for me it was about £90.Hope that helps.

Would have to agree, with so little bring taken off...

Depends how heavy the cue is really.
If it’s under 18oz I would get a long thin drill to drill up the butt until it feels the right weight for you.
If it’s over 18oz this doesn’t really work because there is too much lead/weight around the splices giving the cue a lumpy feel afterwards.
Also if you are going to cut the cue down in length I would do it from the top and not the bottom.

half and ounce and 1/4 of an inch is nothing really. If it were me, I'd just play with it until you adapt to it. I don't see the point in making alterations unless you are a top pro and snooker is your livelihood. Honestly, the chances are it won't suddenly feel better, its probably not that well balanced which is more likely the reason it feels too heavy.

It will actually be more than a 1/4 of an inch. I’m planning 1/4 inch off the butt to help reduce the weight and 1/2 off the tip end as it’s currently 9mm. Just want to know if it can be done to the butt.

It can be done but its a bit of a pain, as you will have to re taper the butt . Its easier to take the full length off that you want from the tip end if the weight it still too much then take the butt joint out and bore from the base and replace the joint
