  • Cue advice please!

    Hey all.

I'm 20 and I've been playing pool for years now and have gone through 2 cues of which the latest one I still use. In the Christmas holidays I really got into snooker and I've decided to splash out on a nice snooker cue as my pool one really isn't up to much - it's a cheap Riley one - £15 with case.

I went down to the Cambridge Snooker Centre today as my mate was buying a cue (just a mess around one) and I started looking. They sell CueCraft ones of which I really liked one for £86. It was a 3/4 with an extension butt. It looked and felt really nice. I didn't play with it though.

My query really is what should I really be looking for and how much do you think I should spend? (I'm a poor student remember!!!). I'm fairly decent at snooker - I can often get 10-20 breaks and sometimes higher, but it's improving everytime I play and I really enjoy it. I'd just like a cue which I can get to grips with and practice hard with.

    Any ideas guys/gals?

[EDIT] Ok so I'm not THAT decent, but I'm getting better! At least I keep telling myself that! [/EDIT]

my advise would be to get a good hand made cue made by someone like CueCraft and stick with it, more expense at first but you will benefit in the long run , see Phil Mumford at the Cambridge Snooker Centre he will look after you. he might even find you a second hand cue cheep !!

      Cool stuff.

I had a long chat with someone there today but unfortunately I didn't catch his name. I'll see if I can find him around next time I go. Hmmm I'm being ever tempted by this cue then.

Well if people say CueCraft are good then I'd be more than willing to get one of them!

      Anyone else got any advice?

make sure its not a machine splice imported cue by CueCraft the shafts are not that good , if it has the CueCraft quick release joint , thats the joint where the 2 dots line up and the joint comes apart ,the joint has 3 sides on the thread, it will be a good quality cue made by CueCraft and not a import.

Yeh the guy there was saying about hand spliced and machine spliced. My mate bought the machine spliced one as it's just his first cue for knocking around with really.

Ok cool, well thanks for the advice!

If u can afford it mate it is worth saving up and getting one custom made for urself. That is always the best way to go.

If u can't afford it those 3\4 cues are great for playing pool but u don't see many people using em for snooker. They are still an excellent cue and alot of people have em.

I wouldn't say a custom made cue is the best way to go unless you know exactly what sizes, weight, etc suits your game. The best thing is to go somewhere which has a number of cues to try out on a table and pick the one you like the best feel of. Paying for a custom made cue can set you back upwards of £130+ and really is only for experienced players who know what they want it a cue.

Ok yeh I don't think a custom cue is really the way forward for me, but a good cue would be really nice. I'm going to go back to the Cambridge Snooker Centre at some point and have a look again. They're meant to be getting more stock in soon so that's good. I just want something I can get to grips with as I'm sure half my pots are off because of a duff rack cue or my pretty shocking pool cue - it's fine for pool but too short for me really - I'm 6'2 and like to hold the cue right at the end.

                    Hey,

I've finally got round to going down to the snooker centre again...

I spoke to the deputy manager who wasn't trying to push a sale which was cooool. I got to play with the cuecrafts "Marksman" and another one like that but the wood is Ash.

I didn't end up buying a cue because I am trying to figure out if spending £145 on a cue plus £66 on a good case is worth it. What do people think? GreenBaize - do you think that sounds a good price? I'd be happy to hear some recommendations from you on this one!

                    Many thanks,

                    Matt

Is the cue a 1 piece or 3/4 jointed and did it come with any extensions? If it was just the cue then that price is a total rip off. You can get a good quality case for a lot cheaper too. Most snooker clubs inflate the prices of cues they sell simply because its easier to buy from one because they have the tables there to try them out so they use that reason to add £20-£30 on to the price.
Check this site www.snookershop.com they have Cue Craft cues and they sell the 1 piece 'Marksman' version for £98, the 3/4 jointed with extension is only £127! Check the case sizes prices too very reasonable. I have bought from this guy before and he is pretty helpful.

If I were you I'd find out what the dimensions were of the cue you tried and then phone snookershop and see if they have that cue at the size you want.

Don't know about cues and prices in the UK. My suggestion is it all comes down to feel. Try many cues before buying one and pick the 1 that feels best.
I have had mine for over 15 yrs. I bought a cheap maple cue $30 here (about 12 pounds UK money) This is the cue I have run all my centuries with. I used to own a Gauthier Trophy (custom made) and have tried many of my friends ash and expensive cues but my cheap maple I like the most.

Also the tip makes a huge difference. I only use Elkmaster on mine. Have to shave it down to 10.25 mm tho

i bought a cue from Stu at greenbaize. have to say i will probably never change my cue again.
i went for a master cue, and it has made me a better player.
knocking in regular 50`s and even had an 85 clearance with it.

                          thanks Stu

                            Hi folks,

this thread should be made sticky, I think this question comes up quite often.

This being my first post here, let me introduce myself: I am 37 years old and have played snooker for years at a local pool place. I'm no good at the game, but it's so much fun that I keep coming back for more ;-)

Anyhow, I'm about to buy my "first" and hopefully my last queue over the next couple of months, and I've checked ebay and all the usual places, and there's one that sells for about 170 Euros called "Ronnie O' Sullivan" that comes with a case and two extensions I believe.

I was wondering if anyone here owns this queue and could comment on its quality and so on.

Also, I'd be interested to hear of any local shops in Britain that would be willing to ship a queue to Germany.

All the best & thanks in advance for your comments,

                            uwe

ps: I am not buying this for the name on it really, otherwise it'd have to be called "Steve Davis" or whatever who was my childhood snooker hero ;-)

I'm always hesitant about the endorsed cues, but I have seen that Sullivan one - it's BCE I beleive and it is really nice looking. Havn't played with it so don't know how it plays - it's personal preference anyway
